Chapter 1

Jaune quickly darted into a nearby alley, some bread held in his arms. He had the hood on his old jacket pulled up to protect against the rain and cold, but it didn't do much. By the time he made it under some cover, scaffolding of some kind, he was completely soaked, but he managed to get the bread mostly unscathed. He froze and held his breath as someone stopped in front of his alley. He let out a sigh of relief as the figure shrugged and walked by.

Jaune sat on a slightly less damp part of the ground and pulled out the bread. He sighed again, this time in slight melancholy as he stared at the stale pieces of food. He was able to nab them from the dumpster from a nearby bakery before they got too rancid and ran back to his alley. He looked at the loaf of bread and the couple of biscuits and sighed. Again.

He stood up and walked over to a small hole in one of the walls of the alley. Inside was a small little nest of stolen blankets and clothes. He climbed in and reached over to a nearby box and placed the food inside of it, deciding to eat them when he actually needed to. He curled up in the small nest and drifted off to sleep.

"Get out of here, you filthy mutt!" A shrill voice yelled, a small black blur flying through the rain shortly after. The blur hit the ground with an 'oof' and laid there for a little bit. The blur was revealed to be a small cat faunus, black ears on her head and bright amber eyes dulled with hunger. She sighed and stood up, smoothing out her grey shirt, turned black in the rain, and started walking, her eyes turned down and her ears flat against her head. Blake hated rain with a passion. She felt her stomach rumble, demanding food, and quickly changed her course to the marketplace. It was probably closed due to the rain, but she could definitely find at least some food in the various trashcans.

Once there, Blake started rummaging through the bins, having to stand on her tiptoes to reach in. Her efforts were rewarded with some biscuits and two half full bags of chips. She shoved them into her shirt and started to walk away towards the more shady parts of the city. She took out one of her biscuits and started to gnaw on it, ignoring the wet bits.

"Hey, girlie." A raspy voice called out, amber eyes turning towards a couple of homeless men standing a couple of feet away, both staring at what she had in her hands. "You got any more a tha' food?"

"None for you." She muttered, taking a few steps backwards, ready to bolt at a moment's notice.

"Aw, don' be like tha'." The second one drawled, wiping one hand across his mouth. "If ya got tha' one, ya oughta some more somewhere on tha' little body of yours." He chuckled, more of a rasp really, and started forward, only for Blake to turn on her heel and dash away.

The little faunus ignored their indignant shouts and kept sprinting away, hearing their voices fall further and further behind her. She turned down one alley and quickly hid behind a discarded box. The two men ran past her hiding spot, not even bothering to slow down to look into the alley. Idiots. Blake thought, mentally scoffing at their inability to be aware of their surroundings.

"Hey." Blake gave a small shriek at the sudden voice behind her, whirling around to find a blond boy rubbing his eyes, a little bit taller than her. He had on a tattered jacket that looked several sizes too big for him and some ripped jeans that hung off his frame. He lowered his hands to reveal a pair of ocean blue eyes, a little bit bleary due to him looking like he just woke up. "Are you just going to stare at me or you gonna tell me your name? I'm Jaune by the way." He grinned at her, thrusting a hand out.

Blake's eyes widened at the sudden gesture, obviously expecting something else, and she quickly turned and bolted. Again.

"Hey wait!" Jaune yelled, stooping down to pick something up off of the floor. "You dropped your chips!" Blake looked back for a brief second to see said chips in his hands and she quickly patted her shirt to make sure. Cursing herself, she kept running, keeping her head down against the rain. She heard pattering feet from Jaune, who deciding to make chase, right behind her and she quickly found him to be harder to lose than the two men earlier.

"H-hey!" Jaune yelled, panting from exertion. "S-stop running!" Blake ignored him, quickly turning a corner, skidding a bit on the wet ground. She bolted into an alley and tried to hide, but saw nothing but a couple of collapsed boxes. She pressed herself into the wall and waited. And waited. And waited.

After a couple of minutes with no sign of Jaune, Blake let out a sigh of relief and walked out of the alley. She peered back the way that she came from, but seeing no sign of the blond boy, she turned just in time to see the grinning face of her pursuer.

"Hi!" Blake let out another shriek, this time slipping backwards in a small puddle. The back of her head hit the pavement and she immediately clutched at it, groaning a bit. She idly noted that it had stopped raining. "Oh my gosh! Are you okay! I didn't mean to scare you!" A groan was his only answer, along with an amber glare. Jaune crouched down next to her, dropping the forgotten bags of chips in the process, and started to poke at her head, feeling for a bump.

"What are you doing!?" Blake hissed, swatting away his hands.

"Seeing if you're hurt!" Jaune exclaimed, ignoring Blake's protests of 'I'm fine!'

"Aren't you going to hit me or yell at me?!" Blake yelled, glaring at Jaune.

"Why the heck would I do that?" Jaune asked, puzzled.

"Most people do, why would you be any different?" Blake snapped, crossing her arms.

"Why do they do that?" Jaune contemplated, rubbing his chin.

"Because I have cat ears!" Blake yelled again, fed up with the questions.

"What? You have cat ears!?" Jaune's eyes sparkled with childish glee. "That's so cool!"

"You're too slow!" Blake whacked Jaune upside the head, amber eyes blazing at the idiocy of the blond. Jaune ignored the blow, instead leaning more towards the cat faunus.

"I wanna touch them!" Jaune pleaded, eyes shining.

"No."

"You're no fun." Jaune pouted, crossing his arms.

"Says the one who chased me." Jaune perked up again, turning a bit to snatch up the bags of chips.

"Oh yeah! I wanted to give these back to you!" Jaune grinned at Blake's blank stare.

"… Why didn't you just take them?"

"Boys are not allowed to steal from girls." Jaune said it with such a tone of sheer determination that Blake didn't bother to argue the statement.

"Um… Okay?" Blake hesitantly took the offered bags of food and started to leave. "Bye."

"Wait!" Blake stopped at the outburst and risked a look behind her, spying Jaune staring at the floor, lightly scuffing it with his shoe. "Can you… stay with me? It gets lonely after a while and I have food! And, and, clothes and blankets and stuff!"

"I don't know…" Blake trailed off after seeing Jaune look at her, eyes pleading and just a little forlorn. She contemplated it for a bit, thinking that it would be nice to have a change of clothes for once, and blankets wouldn't hurt. Finally, she came to a decision. "Fine."

"Yay!" Jaune cheered, reaching over to grab Blake's hand and tugging it. He quickly pulled her out of the alley into the newly gathered crowd of people thanks to the rain stopping. The passerby's either scrunched their face in disgust at their obvious homelessness or smiled at the cute sight of the two thirteen year-olds marching through the street. "It's this way!"

Jaune dragged her into the alley that they first met in. "It's over here!" He pulled her further in before turning a corner near the end. It lead to a dead end and was flanked by two abandoned buildings. He led her to a hole that was knocked into one of the walls. Jaune stepped back and gestured to it, inviting her inside. Blake hesitantly climbed in, instinctively expecting a trap, even though Jaune didn't seem to have the brains to make one. She poked her head inside first, peering around a bit to get her bearings, before climbing in the rest of the way.

She lightly stepped out of the way to let Jaune in and lead her a little bit farther into the building. They turned a corner to come upon a door to a janitor's closet. Jaune swiftly opened it and gestured Blake to go inside.

"Ladies first." Jaune smiled, Blake rolling her eyes at his words.

"I don't think that I'm a lady, but thank you." Jaune smiled again as the cat faunus walked through the doorway.

The first thing that registered was the smell. It was slightly musty, but not overtly so. The second thing was a nest of blankets on one corner along with a bunch of scattered boxes. It wasn't the worst place she had ever been to. Blake nodded in satisfaction, missing Jaune's relieved sigh.

She likes it! He squealed inwardly, throwing his hands up into the air. Blake looked back to see Jaune dancing on the spot, giggling at his glee. "Let me show you around!" Jaune exclaimed, grabbing the girl's hand. "This is where we'll sleep!" Jaune pointed at the pile of blankets before dashing off to the next thing, despite the small size of the closet. "This is where I keep all my thing like food and clothes!" He pointed at the boxes. "And that's it!" He let go of Blake's hand, allowing her to actually look around.

"That was a short tour." Blake remarked, crouching down to poke at a box. "This is comfy." She flopped down onto the blankets before Jaune flinched.

"Hey! You'll get the blankets wet!" Jaune yelled, annoyed. He reached down and pulled her up before throwing some clothes in her face. "Change in here and then you can lay down!" He walked out of the room with clothes for himself and closed the door. Blake blinked before looking down at the clothes that fell on the floor. Picking them up, she noticed a dark blue shirt and a pair of black sweat pants that looked slightly big for her, but she would be able to manage. I always do. She quickly swapped shirts and slipped out of her old pants to put on her new sweat pants. She looked around a little bit and found some string, which she tied around her waist to keep her pants up.

"Done." She called, knocking on the door to get Jaune's attention. Blake stepped back as the door swung open, revealing the blond and his ever-present grin.

"You hungry?" He asked, reaching in to a box as Blake's stomach rumbled as if on cue, making her blush.

"… Yes." She muttered, crossing her hands over her stomach. Jaune just grinned again and pulled out half a loaf of bread and two biscuits along with a bottle of water. He broke the loaf in half and handed her a piece along with a biscuit before sitting down on the blankets, placing he bottle of water down between them. The faunus sat down next to him, already munching on part of her bread. They both sat there and ate in silence, the atmosphere light and friendly. Jaune finished first and looked at Blake, noticing how her cat ears waggled in delight at the filling, but stale, bread. Jaune grinned again, still extremely happy at gaining a new friend.

Early in the year, not sure when, in one of my chapters of A Work in Progress, not sure which chapter, I said that I would release a new story! And here it is! I said that I would release it when my older sister, known as Mixer Monochrome on this lovely little site, drew me a cover for it and she finally did! After much badgering I can assure you! I hope you liked it! I should have the second chapter up soon as I had already written the majority of it. If you have any question, be sure to review, or if you want it to be more private you can PM me, and I will try my best to answer!
