Chapter 1

The Lost Spirit Renewed

-Yanno Kanagi-

Okay in all honesty it isn't a place of lost hope, in fact it is the one place where I think people go to so that their dreams can be realized, or their passions to become a reality. As I walk through the hallways of this school I can listen in on how passionate everyone of the students from this school are about their goals.

The main reason for that most likely is the school's pride and joy, Seido's Highschool Baseball Team, a team that use to dominate in the tournaments but are now in the middle of rebuilding back to that former glory with its coach: Kataoka Tesshin.

Despite the set backs though, it seems this year the team will be pushing to go to Nationals this year as it seems the team is finally ready to get back to its spot of glory, at least that is what I can tell from the chatter around me as I walk through these hallways hands in my pockets.

As for me I don't know why I am here at Seido, I mean... My dreams got crushed for the most part for a long while atleast that is what the doctor told me.. Oh wait I should tell you my story first shouldn't I before I get into the depressing part huh?

Well to begin with I use to be a Baseball player myself, yes I said it, use to be a player. I use to live in America and played it regularly back there, I was even a starter in my middle school days but then my family told me we would be moving to our home country of Japan.

I didn't have a problem with it for the most part, I liked Japan and I know baseball is over there as well but on my last game before my middle school year was up, my life changed for what I love and what I want to do in life.

-Flashback: 1 Year Ago-

Scoreboard:

Team 1 vs Team 4

Top of 6th Inning

2 Outs

Team 1: 4 Runs|2 Hits

Team 2: 0 Runs|8 Hits

Batter: James Tompson, Empty Count

Record: 0 hits

Pitcher: Yanno Kanagi(Right-Handed), Allowed two hits this inning but came back with two strikeouts, has mainly shutdown the other team's offense.

Record: 5 Strikeouts, 52 pitches so far.

I sighed to relax my body making note of the lead we had to get my body to relax, this was the last inning since Middle School Baseball lasts for 6 innings, but right now I am facing off against this team's greatest batter and possible future MLB superstar. At least that is the rumor around the area.

As for me I am just a pitcher, I can bat yeah but not as good as some of the pros, I got control and a fastball but those are the only things I have for the moment, I have been working on other pitches and tested them out during this inning which is... Why I have 2 hits so far.

Their other pitcher at the start messed up big time but then their reliever came in and shut down out defense, meaning if I don't stop their offense here I don't think we will be able to win. I had to take another breath to relax my muscles again as I stare at the batter watching calmly.

He has seen my fastball a couple of times so he knows the speed by now, should I try a change-up? I could but the speed would be too much the same. I look to my catcher to see what hes thinking before he gives me a sign to pitch a fastball to the inside corner.

I look at the batter before giving a nod to my catcher before getting set up for my windup, I look to 2nd and 1st base the runners not taking any chances on steals as I look back then move my arm back, leg up then slam my foot down as I follow through on my throw, the ball leaves my hand quickly moving to the outside corner.

The batter waits for a moment then swings, her barely tips the ball hitting it behind the foul line for a foul ball. I sigh as I at least get a strike but now I am stuck on what pitch to use now as my catcher throws the ball back to me for me to pitch with again.

I stare at the batter trying to figure out what he is thinking before the catcher gets me a signal for.. A change-up?! I stare at him with wide eyes wondering what he is thinking at a time like this but he says nothing and puts up his glove on the inside corner again ready to receive my pitch.

I breath to relax my self then exhale before nodding trusting my catcher knows what he is doing even if I don't think so. I usually do my own pitch but as the game goes on I usually trust my catcher's judgment from that point.

I setup for my wind-up again to pitch, I change my grip on the ball before throwing my pitch to where the catcher wants it, it goes the same speed as always like my fastball since I am not able to really control that power I release. However the change I throw luckily for me moves down into the strike zone barely.

The batter quickly swings but he misses barely as the ball dropped low enough for the miss for another strike, I sigh a bit in relief as the batter missed my change-up as I receive the ball again from the catcher moving my muscles and bones to relax myself yet again, I take off my cap to clear off some off the sweat from my forehead before putting it back one then looking back to my catcher who gave me the signal for a fastball to the outside corner.

I gave a small nod but I got a bit worried that the batter knew this was coming a bit, I don't know if my catcher could tell but regardless I decided to trust my catcher's judgment on that last pitch... The last pitch I would throw ever, at least what I think will be my last pitch.

I wind-up ready to throw before throwing my fastball directly to the catcher's mitt however the sound of contact was heard as I stared at the batter who just swung and hit the ball but he seemed jammed, but that was the least of my concern as the ball move to what looked to be going out to the field, actually hit the wrist of my hand, the one I pitched with.

I gritted my teeth, my wrist throbbed with pain and it felt like I lost all feeling in my fingers and hand. But I quickly had to react as the batter ran to 1st regardless of the hit to my wrist, through the pain I quickly picked up the ball the best I could unable to grasp it but able to put it into my palm for me to scoop it up then give a soft throw to the 1st baseman who caught it to get the batter out with some luck.

But that came with a cost as knelt down feel my hand just losing feeling and throbbing pain, all I can make it do or see it do was twitch.

I got checked shortly after the game, I was able to get us the win but the cost for the win was my ability to pitch, I would be able to use the hand again with therapy, but as for pitching, the process of regaining that ability would be a long recovery process, or well that is what I though.

-Present-

For the most part I did regain the use of my hand and able to do normal things as usual, however as for pitching I can only do a little bit of it, but I know I am not 100% not by a long shot, I don't know how long the recovery will last but if it lasts too long as I think it is then my dream is gonna disappear.

I moved to Japan shortly after where my family are having me go to Seido, I don't know why but I think they are still holding onto my dream of being a Major League Pitcher but day by day I just think that dream is starting to disappear.

But luckily its only my first year, I still have time right? I'm not sure though, I don't think I would be able to join Seido's baseball team to begin with, compared to me there are people who would be more help to the team than me.

But today is not that day, today is a normal day where I just hear chatter among the students about daily life, a little bit about the baseball team which just makes me feel down but I sigh to get my spirit back up so I can focus on my school work, I was fines grades wise in my last year of middle school, and with my down time now that I have, it allowed me to get my grades better and learn Japanese.

I began hearing some noise coming from around me, mostly laughter, I look up to see who it was to see it was none other than Eijun Sawamura, a 1st year, and a pitcher for Seido's baseball team, he is surrounded by players from the team laughing at his remarks from practice, one of them even repeats the words and mocks Sawamura.

I chuckle a bit at the scene, it gave me some of my spirit back, but I envied the group a bit, mainly because they can still play while I... No don't think that Yanno, do your think, you can bounce back. That is when I look at my hand more specifically my wrist which is the main cause of my whole hand, the ball that was hit back to me hit the wrist area damaging the nerves.

But luckily... My hand is back in usable shape, I can grip a ball hard, and do basic deeds with it but like I said earlier, for pitching it useless, no matter how many times I pitch my power isn't the same, but for some reason my control is still intact so that is a good thing.

I focus back on my school work as the bell rings for class to start.

I stretch my arms as the bell rings for school to be over looking up at the ceiling a bit with a frown as I only see my wrist as I stretched, I shake my head a bit as I got up and went to grab my back before my ear twitches a bit, "Hey, hey, want to see the team practice today?"

I looked over at the two boys talking about Seido's baseball daily practice, "Yeah, I want to see how that monster of a pitcher is doing."

Monster of a pitcher, ah right Furuya Satoru, hes another 1st year pitcher who's fastball is too fast and intimidating for people to hit, I then begin to remember my days of pitching before closing my eyes collecting my stuff a bit before stopping as I heard the two boys leave.

I began to think on it, but maybe I should check out the baseball team, check to see how well the team is actually doing, it might help me with my spirit, but maybe not every time I see the baseball field as I pass by I just get a bit angry at not being able to play.

I fling my bag over my shoulder and begin to leave the classroom, it would only take me a few minutes and a few flights of stairs to get to the ground floor and to the entrance, I switch my shoes then head out of the school following the others heading to the baseball field.

I walk out to a open space away from everyone to get a better look at the field seeing the third, second, and first year players all practicing hard, doing exercises, practicing batting, there is also some pitchers pitching the bullpen.

It was actually really amazing to watch, seeing all these players giving their all to the thing they love, it made me a bit happy to see such a thing, but the hand I use to pitch clenched a fist in a bit of anger, he wished it was him in that bullpen, to be able to play again.

Then suddenly a woman walks up to the group of students that were watching making everyone afraid a bit, as for me I was a bit confused until I saw the team's Coach walking up as well which was probably the reason for the fear in the students.

"Everyone we know you want to see everyone practice, but please learn to respect our wishes and wait for the upcoming matches. Otherwise we wish for you to please leave so we may practice." The woman said, the students whine a bit but then shiver and walk away with fear seeing the coach's anger.

I blinked watching everyone leaving before staring back at the field silently, "I wish I could play again on the field." I said to myself gripping my hand again before slowly moving to walk away before feeling a hand on my shoulder.

I very slowly look back to see it was the coach of the team, Kataoka Tesshin, "Not you, you shall stay."

The woman was not surprised for some reason, my eye twitched a bit wondering why the coach was letting me come to the field, did he hear me? I don't now but I nodded as I slowly follow the coach and woman back to the practice field.

As I walked in I got stares from the players mainly due to the coach but then notice me wondering why I am here on the practice field, one of the players walk up looking at me then back to the coach, "Coach I though students can't watch our practice.."

The player was Yuki Tetsuya, the current captain of the team, he is most likely the team's best hitter. But it seems that there is a rule about students not being allowed to watch. I was about to move to leave when Coach Kataoka said, "This student will be an exception till I state otherwise understood?"

Tetsuya, or well Tetsu, looked at me for a short while before nodding, "Understood." He said then went back to practice. I just blink slightly confused as I stand there along side the coach watching the team practicing.

"Yanno Kanagi, use to play baseball back in America, played the role of pitcher correct?" The womman asked.

I was a bit shocked the woman knew my name and what I did before nodding, "Y-Yeah... But.."

"But?" The coach asked, I was a bit intimidated which was hard to do, I am usually calm about things.

I look to my hand, "Well.. I can't play now... At least for a long while." I said softly gripping my hand a bit.

"Is that you decided or someone else did?" The coach asked me, I looked up at him for a moment then looked down.

"Well I..." I begin but I am quickly cut off.

"Tetsuya!" The coach calls out to Tetsu who looks at the coach calmly. "Get some players ready to play the field! Also get yourself and some of our best hitters ready for batting!"

Tetsuya and the rest of the team stared at him in surprise, but Tetsu only nodded, "Understood coach." He said then nodded to the rest of the players.

I blinked a bit then the coach says something to me, "Go to the locker room, there is a uniform in there for you."

"H-Huh?!" I asked the coach.

"Your playing, so you need to be equip with the right equipment, everything you need is in the locker room we can wait." The coach said staring at me, "Or you can keep running away from your dream."

I stared at him in shock but fell silent wondering why the coach was having me pitch, I sigh a bit, "Alright I'll pitch but I don't know what your planning." I said as I walked off.

I slowly walked into the locker room to grab the provided uniform, surprisingly there was a locker with a uniform in front of it hanging, and on the bench in front of it... Wait a minute isn't that my mitt?

I pick it up to look at the mitt fitting into my left hand, it still fit surprisingly, it was black for the main color but the stitching was white, I took off the mitt to put on the uniform wondering why all of this is happening.

I was sure I didn't tell no one I use to be a pitcher, did my family tell the staff I use to play? Its possible but I wouldn't know. I stare at my right hand wondering if I will be able to pitch at all, could my wrist handle all of those pitches?

I guess there would be one way to find out I suppose, I put on the cap that came with the uniform and then place the mitt into my hand before walking outside of the locker room to head back to the practice field.

I walk out to the field a few minutes later and I am greeted with shouting as the fielders are getting ready to catch any balls that are thrown their way, there are some 2nd years and a couple of 3rd years in the mix of players.

As for the batters that are swinging away before looking at me as they spotted me, the intimidation was getting to me, they seemed really trained and experienced compared to who I faced, and that was with using my normal Fastball and my incompletely Change-up, will I be able to do anything? I asked myself this.

The Batters were as followed: Kominato Ryosuke, Yuki Tetsuya. Masuko Tooru, Isashiki Jun, and Kuramochi Youichi.

I stare at the group of batter then sigh a bit to myself, I still remember my relaxation methods to keep my body from getting tense before getting a pat on the back.

"It seems like the new Student knows how to relax under the pressure. Hey Sawamura, Furuya you can learn a thing or two from your fellow classmate." I look back seeing a kid in catcher's gear, he had athletic goggles on which are sued to give people better vision like they were playing with glasses.

"Shut up Miyuki-Senpai!" A loud voice returned back, I look back to see Sawamura and Furuya the 1st year pitchers for the team, beside them were Tanba Koichiro and Kawakami Norifumi(Nori for short).

They stopped the practice of the pitchers for this as well? I rub the back of my head wondering if this is a bad idea before my shoulder is patted again, "Don't mind them, they are only here to see how you pitch."

I look at Miyuki confused, by the way this guy's full name is Miyuka Kazuya, hes the main catcher for the team, "Yeah but, I got to ask why am I pitching again?" I ask Miyuki.

He just laughed walking towards the field, "Well why not... You are a Pitcher... Right?" He asked turning his head to me, I glared at him for that remark making a fist.

"Yeah I am!" I said to Miyuki who only smiled.

"Good now then let me go over the signals with you." Signals? He knows my pitches already?

He balls up his hand down and pokes out a finger, "Fastball" Then two poked out, "Change-up.. Right?" I nod to Miyuki.

"Good, now lets go out there.." Miyuki said heading out to the batter's box.

I gulp a bit before walking up to the pitcher's mound moving the dirt a bit with my foot then look around the field a bit, "So this is the pitcher's mound on a high school level?" I ask myself with a small smile.

I turn to the batters box my eyes widen to see who the umpire was, it was none other than the Coach himself, he stands there staring at me with fierce eyes, I can only face him with intimidated ones, "Kanagi, go ahead and warm-up your arm."

I slowly nod then stare at Miyuki who puts his mitt to the middle of the strike zone I can see virtually in my head, he gives me the signal for a fastball, I sigh once more to loosen my grip, thinking of nothing but the baseball in my mitt... No not my mitt, my hand, in my hand.

I missed this feeling, my grip is back but my pitch... Don't worry on that Yanno focus on pitching, I get myself ready to wind-up, I lift my leg up as I breath in some air before slamming down my foot before pitching the ball as hard as I could, to my surprise the pitch goes faster than I thought and slam into Miyuki's mitt.

I stare at Miyuki then at my hand, that pitch felt like my normal pitch just now... Maybe I have been holding back more that I thought. I will have to keep pitching to see, Miyuki moves the spot to the right corner, he calls for a fastball.

I nod taking another breath as I wind-up then follow through with my throw the fastball goes straight into Miyuki's mitt again, my control is still there thats good.

He signals me to do a change-up now into his mitt, its a bit tough to do a change-up for me though... Lets see if I can do it. I grip the ball differently then sigh a bit before winding up once more, since its a change up, instead of straight at his mitt...

I begin to follow through on my throw, then aim right above his mitt! I said to myself as I throw the ball like a fastball, Miyuki's eyes widen a bit above to move his mitt to catch the high fastball but the ball moves down instead straight into his mitt in Miyuki's surprise.

Miyuki stared at me then smiled, "You sure you injured that wrist of yours?" He shouted with a grin, "I think your just making an excuse on not to play!"

I gritted my teeth a bit but relaxed myself it wasn't the time to get angry I had to keep calm, I stared at the coach who nodded as he motioned for the game to start, "Isashiki you bat first!"

The first batter came up, he was a 3rd year by the look of things, he had a beard and brown hair who seemed a bit angry I guess, regardless the man pointed the his bat at me, "Alright then 1st Year! Come at me with everything you have at me!" He said in a loud voice.

I blinked a bit at the guy's attitude before grinning, "I didn't plan to give only a little effort to begin with!" I told Isasbiki preparing for an incoming battle of Batters vs Pitcher.
