Mornings

Duo always puts the alarm clock on the other side of the room so that he has to get up to turn it off. If he doesn't do this, he'll just reach out and mash every available button until it stops that god awful beeping, all the while never really waking up. It has happened that he forgot to move the clock, those are the days he's late for class or work. He's grumpy those days. It has happened that I put the clock back on his bedside table after he'd gone to bed, just so that he'd be in bed with me a little longer in the morning. He's late for class on those days too, but cuddling before breakfast puts him in great mood.

When Duo wakes up on time on a weekday, which means waking up at obscene hours like 5.30 A.M., he sits up, swings his legs over the edge of the bed and just sits there for a minute, sometimes two. He uses that time to allow his head to clear, to forget his dreams or to get rid of morning wood. He'll get up then and amble toward the bathroom for a quick shower. In the summer, he'll be naked; if it's chilly, he'll wear a t-shirt and his ass will peek out, but when it's cold, he'll wear thick, black t-shirts that reach all the way to his knees. I have my reasons to dislike winter.

After the shower, he brushes and braids his hair. Sometimes he does it in the bathroom, sometimes in the bedroom. Sometimes, if I'm awake enough, I'll do it for him. He's often late on such mornings too.

He dresses according to the mood he's in, so his outfit can vary from all black, to fire truck red, or even something flashy in a hundred different colours. He looks great with a bandana and a tie-died t-shirt.

He claims to never be hungry in the morning, but while he dresses, I make toast and coffee and he always eats it before dropping a kiss on my lips and dashing out the front door. Sometimes, he'll poke his head back in a minute later, to casually say that he loves me. Those times, I answer with a slightly less carefree 'love you too'.

When Duo does not have to get up, neither of us moves out of bed before noon. Unless we need lube or condoms from the bathroom, in that case, we flip a coin to see who leaves our warm cocoon of sheets and blankets. Lounging in bed is something that Duo taught me and now probably something that I could call a hobby.

When we do finally get out of bed, mostly because we're hungry and our apartment does not have room service, we don't really bother with clothes. Or we used to not bother with them anyway, we've learned how to wear our fuzzy robes when answering the door ever since we had a slight run-in with the parents of a shocked and frightened girl scout.

There are days that Duo gets up and I stay in bed with my laptop where it was meant to be: in my lap. Working from my own home is a perk of being an independent software developer. Duo is constantly up and about on those days: doing chores, singing along to the radio, telling me things that happened in class or something like that. That's usually when I pull him back into bed with me and show him that I love him.

It's nice to spend my mornings with Duo, or any other time of the day, really. As long as it's just the two of us, I don't really care where or when we are.

He's beautiful and will always be, especially in the morning.
