Broken Promise

This isn't the one-shot I intended to write - the one I have intended to write is currently unfinished in my documents folder which I will finished once it finally turns out right.

If you haven't noticed already I always write tragic one-shots for this fandom and if you've played the game you will understand why.

I guess you could say it is LaraxAlex in a friendship (or relationship if you read it that way) type of story with the obvious LaraxSam friendship at the end.

R&R please :)

It is night on the Endurance and everyone has returned to his or her quarters. Walking down the quiet and dim lit corridor towards her room is Lara – the last person to leave the kitchen. On her way all of the room lights are off except one, slowing her pace Lara stops outside the door and peaks in the porthole window.

Pacing inside is Alex, one of the members of the exhibition.

Knocking on the door stops Alex in a mid-pace as he looks at the door startled before recognising Lara looking through.

A slight nod from Alex and Lara opened the door before quickly stepping inside; Lara looks around the room for a minute before leaning against the door.

No one talks for a moment, Alex shifts from one foot to the other as he looks everywhere but at Lara scrutinising gaze.

Finally, Lara spoke up, "What's worrying you?"

Startled at the sudden question Alex stumbles over his words, "Wha-? N-no, nothing is me worrying."

"Alex, you're words don't make sense, 'me worrying' is a dead giveaway," Lara states as she crosses her arms.

Alex lets out a sigh at being caught, "What if it goes wrong, Lara?"

"What goes wrong?"

"This. What if going into the Dragon's Triangle is what we shouldn't do? The storms are horrendous there Lara," Alex answers as he looks to the floor not willing to meet the eyes of his friend, his crush.

"I won't let anything happen," Lara says determined.

"You can't control the weather, Lara," Alex says with a small smile.

"I never did say I could, I'm not the descendent of Himiko here," Lara replies as a smile itches to be let through.

"Maybe Sam can control it, eh?" Alex jokes.

A short laugh escapes Lara; Alex looks up in surprise as he watches Lara smile.

"Don't worry too much, Alex, I'll protect you from the monsters," Lara teases.

Alex smiles and holds out his pinkie, "Promise?" Lara lets out a gentle chuckle before connecting her pinkie with his.

"I promise."

That night Lara offered to go on watch first.

Reyes is right; everyone around me keeps on dying. Roth, Grim, Alex… Lara thinks.

Lara looks at the sleeping figures of her friends, the remaining of her friends. Someone's missing.

"Sam?" Lara whispers.

"Here," Sam whispers from behind Lara. Lara lets out a sigh of relief as Sam sits down beside her.

"I thought you were gone for a moment there," Lara states quietly, staring into the dying flames of the fire. "Those bastards have gone quiet, it's too suspicious."

"What happened on the Endurance Lara?" Sam asks after a moment.

Swallowing the lump in her throat, Lara begins, "When I found Alex, his leg was pinned down and I couldn't help him there. Then the islanders came and started shooting at us, Alex told me to leave… and…" Lara stops and looks at the sky, blinking away the tears, "He blew that entire room up."

"Sweetie," Sam says gently as she pulls Lara into a hug.

"I promised him, Sam, I promised to protect him before we entered the Dragon's Triangle. I couldn't keep that promise," Lara chokes on her words.

"It's okay, sweetie, let it out," Sam says quietly as she runs her hand over Lara's hair.

For the first time since the shipwreck, Lara let herself cry in front of her best friend.
