So this was inspired by UnitedOsprey's "Legend of Zelda: Remnants of Tri" and the new game I just got: "Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild." I have UnitedOsprey's permission...I don't want to say his or her because I honestly don't know.
Though I did recently discover that UnitedOsprey, like me, is on the Autism spectrum! Go support UnitedOsprey!
So, where does the game fit in on the Zelda Timeline? It is after Ocarina of Time, which didn't help anything for fans as the timeline split into THREE during Ocarina of Time. timeline Link remains an adult leading to Wind Waker, Phantom Hourglass, and Spirit Tracks.
The "canon" ending of him being sent back to relive his lost childhood goes through Majora's Mask, Twilight Princess, and Four Swords Adventures.
Thus leaves the Defeated Hero timeline, and (while I haven't quite gotten it yet, with 81 out of 120 shrines completed), his "Tunic of the Wild" you get for completing every shrine adds to this. Like the designs in the "Defeated Hero timeline" games: Oracle of Ages/Seasons, A Link to the Past, Link's Awakening, A Link Between Worlds, Zelda 1, and Zelda 2, it has a yellow band around the base of Link's tunic cap. Also, the Demon King is referred to as "Ganon" and not "Ganondorf" in both the Child and Adult timelines, as when he got all three pieces of the Triforce Ganon shed his Gerudo form and took on a form of evil incarnate.
It seems Breath of the Wild takes places AFTER the "last" game in the Defeated Hero Timeline: Zelda 2: Adventure of Link.
Remnants of the Wild
Truth among Tales
In the Kingdoms of Remnant, there exist many tales. Heroes, tragedies, lore, and fairy-tales. Yet, even the most outlandish of tales often have basis in truth. One thought of nothing more than a fairy-tale was the tale of the golden kingdom of the Goddesses. When the world was nothing, three Golden Goddesses flew down from the Sacred Realm. Their names were Din, Nayru, and Farore.
Din, Goddess of Power, with her mighty flaming arms, created the Earth and cultivated the land.
Nayru, Goddess of Wisdom, blessed the Earth and gave knowledge of law to the land.
Farore, Goddess of Courage, with her rich soul created the beings that inhabited the Earth.
Then, task completed, the three Goddesses left. Where they departed an item of immense power was placed. Three golden Triangles forming a larger triangle with the aspects of Power, Wisdom, and Courage remained. This, was the Triforce. This item would grant the wish of anyone who would touch it, though the Gods themselves could not use it. If one was pure of heart, the land would prosper in a new golden age. If the heart of the person touching it was corrupted, the land would be thrown into strife.
The Goddesses had created two brothers to watch over the Triforce and maintain balance. Yet, while one rejoiced and sought to create, the other wanted nothing but destruction. This lasted for centuries before they compromised and made the ancestors of humans; the Hylians. Hylians were given free will, knowledge, and the power to create upon their new world. They thrived.
Then a Demon of Darkness, Demise, appeared and spread destruction, creating monsters to follow his bidding and sought the Triforce to kill the Gods. Many Champions of different races fell to the beasts rampage until the Goddess left to care for the Triforce, Hylia, ripped a chunk of the Earth with the Hylians on it and had it float safely in the sky away from Demise's reach before sealing the demon.
Centuries passed before a boy descended from the clouds garbed in green as he sought a friend who fell down to the land. He crafted the Master Sword, the Darkness Sealing Sword of Evil's Bane. He slayed the Demon, but Demise would not go quietly. He cursed the Hero and his friend Zelda to be plagued by a reincarnation of his immense hatred and fury. This cycle of the Hero, Princess, and Dark One facing each other in cataclysmic battle repeated.
Eventually, they were prepared for the Dark One's return as the Demon King Ganon. The Royal Family's protectors, the Sheikah, created mechanical animals known as the Four Divine Beasts, and mechanical protectors known as Guardians. They worked perfectly. The Guardians and Divine Beasts struck Ganon with their weapons as the Hero and Princess sealed him away once again. Yet, he did not go quietly. In a last ditch effort, Ganon's immense power reshaped the land and sealed the Kingdom of Hyrule away within a mountain as he was sealed yet again.
Hyrule eventually became a fairy-tale, and the Four Main Kingdoms of Remnant took their place. Vale, Vaccuo, Atlas, and Mistral. Yet, damage from Ganon, despite being forgotten, remained. A witch named Salem discovered a remnant of Ganon's dark power and from it created Beasts of Darkness known as Grimm. The Brother of Darkness strengthened the Grimm, having been corrupted himself from Ganon's power.
The Brother of Light gave the way for the humans and now Faunus to unlock their hidden Aura and a way to manipulate the elements themselves, via colorful crystals known as Dust. Yet, within Remnant, the Brothers knew traces of Hyrule remained, waiting to awaken. Gerudo and Sheikah were spread in the blood of a few families. There were rumors of those bearing silver eyes being of Sheikah blood.
Yet, one day, a testing of the flying weapons created by the Kingdom of Atlas split the mountain, revealing Hyrule. There was much shock and confusion as the Four Kingdoms suddenly became Five.
Atlas, against the wishes of the other Three Kingdoms, since it was the most militaristic, attacked Hyrule. At first, they were winning VERY easily, with the advantages of Guns and Aura. Then, Hyrule retaliated. Using teams of soldiers from the different races; Rito, Hylians, Zora, Gorons, Koroks, and Gerudo, Hyrule unleashed the Guardians and Four Divine Beasts upon the Kingdom that dare attacked them.
Despite being more technologically more advanced, the peace among the Kingdoms had made Atlas stagnate, while Hyrule had been preparing for the return of Ganon. Atlas crumbled, and became part of Hyrule.
The proud King of Hyrule used Atlas's communication relays to send messages to the other kingdoms. "We have returned in peace, yet came under fire from our neighbors. The Slaughter of the innocent that this neighboring Kingdom started will not be taken lightly. We know you are allies, but not your ally is part of Hyrule. Surrender and live in peace, or face the might of the lands of the Gods." At first, when this declaration was made the drums of war started, until the Four Divine Beasts completely moved past the town and cities full of innocent civilians at destroyed the biggest military bases in the remaining Kingdoms. A young boy with his seven sisters had watched in awe as a giant stone and metal eagle flew over his farming town, blocking out the sun where it flew over.
With the catastrophic military losses, the Kingdoms surrendered. The King welcomed them openly, and stated that they were to be treated like any other inhabitant of Hyrule, as Hyrule now had the districts of Atlas, Vale, Vaccuo, and Mistral. The conquered lands were quite surprised at how they were now protected peacefully by the races and machines that attacked them. The beings of Hyrule were very easygoing for the most part. Each district was allowed it's own government, as long as they answered and reported to the Royal Family. With this, Faunus Equality was quickly realized. Despite the beasts that died like Grimm, despite not sharing the markings of the evil creatures, they found equality under Hyrule. Human, Hylian, Zora, Faunus, Goron, Korok, or Rito...all were equal.
Families like the Winchesters soon found their status lost as their racist attitudes ostracized them from the peaceful land.
It was then Beacon's Headmaster Ozpin approached the King with an interesting idea; a cultural sharing. There would be an exchange of students to learn under Hyrule's prominant families, as the Races of Hylians could learn under the Districts schools for huntsmen. With this proposal accepted after much debate, soon different children were brought to Hyrule Castle. With the Kingdoms united, technological advances grew. Soon every Hylian had a Scroll, and they managed to create more of the ancient Sheikah "Shrine of Resurrection".
Jaune Arc, the only son of the Arc family, with a history of heroes rising from his family.
Ruby Rose, a young girl with silver eyes and Sheikah blood and her half-sister Yang Xiao-Long, who was of Gerudo blood.
Pyrrha Nikos, Champion of Mistral despite her young age.
Weiss Schnee of Mistral, of the famous family.
Blake Belladonna, daughter of a former equal rights activist.
Lie Ren and Nora Valkyrie were found, only survivors of a town destroyed by Grimm.
Headmaster Ozpin personally selected these children as teams JNPR and RWBY, and unlocked the Aura of the children whose family had not yet unlocked it. They were given special scrolls, known as Sheikah Scrolls. Ruby desired to learn how to craft her own scythe after watching her uncle Qrow use one skillfully as Jaune met another four year old boy. This boy had a blue eyes and blonde hair like Jaune, and both had infectious grins. This Hylian was named Link. These two boys grew as close as brothers, and the prodigy swordsman Link often tutored his less skilled "brother". Jaune's attitude was infectious and his cheerfulness often brought the morale of others around him up.
The groups grew close to each other, and soon Link had immense pressure put onto his shoulders as the Master Sword chose him as it's wielder. Link grew quiet, and when he was alone he confessed to his "brother" that "with the eyes of the world on me, I deem it necessary to silently bear the burden and keep my emotions locked within me." With Ganon's approach soon drawing closer, they found a single champion from each race to bond with and pilot the Divine Beasts to free up the soldiers to help lead the fight against Ganon's army, and Teams RWBY and JNPR worked alongside Princess Zelda, the Hylian Champion Link, the Goron Champion, Rito Champion, Gerudo Champion, and Zora Champion...
But Ganon wasn't stupid. He knew of the cycle of Reincarnation, and of the tactics that had defeated him as Hyrule was sealed 10,000 years ago. He didn't make his return loudly announcing his presence. No, instead he slunk out undetected and put a plan into motion.
Professor Ozpin had been cursed by the Gods to reincarnate for failing to defeat Salem in the past, so when he felt his Cycle of Reincarnation Break, he quickly went to inform the King. During the years the children of RWBY and JNPR had grown up under the tutelage of the Royal Family, Professor Ozpin, despite the King finding him weird, became a trusted Advisor, especially after stopping an assassination attempt. To hear that an ancient being had been slain so quietly and with so little fanfare, especially since the Grimm continued to roam the land, was concerning. It was then they found out Ganon had escaped.
His blue eyes widened as a figure in a blue shirt wielding a beautiful sword that glimmered even against the darkness was blasted, his drained aura shattering as he collapsed and the figure's blue eyes stared at him before he grabbed his hands and a blue glow went from his brother to him, his brother's eyes closing and breathing stopped. A beautiful woman in white clothes was barely away from Death's door, and he felt like it was his duty to lead the things away from her. He felt nothing but pain and anger, those things had turned on them and killed his brother, and yet he felt no hatred. A mark on his hand appeared and he grabbed his brother's sword and sheathe and continued fighting, darkness, red, and blue flashing lights burning all around him.
"A NEW HYLIAN CHAMPION RISES! THE HEIR OF THE SWORD CONTINUES TO FIGHT!" Someone shouted. Then, there was a flash of golden yellow and everything went dark.
"Jaune." A man's voice echoed in his ears as his eyelids stirred. For some reason, this man's voice was very familiar, but he couldn't recall why. "Wake up. You and the others have been sleeping for the past 100 years." His eyes slowly opened, and he had to shut them as the blue light stung his eyes as he felt water around him drain, leaving him in a strange, hard device. He saw a feathered being, a stone-like being, another boy with dark hair, and various girls (including a fish-like one) in their undergarments and he adverted his eyes. According to that voice, his name was Jaune...so why couldn't he remember anything.
"You all were nearly on Death's door when you all were taken to the Shrine of Resurrection, so I imagine that you all have very little memories." The voice said, as the others started waking up. "I have Sheikah Scrolls waiting for you on the pedestals in front of you, but first, you may want to get changed. I couldn't do much, but I left some pieces of your past on those scrolls with your names."
"Is anyone else hearing that voice?" The stone-like man with white rock-like beard and hair asked as the others gave confirmation. Jaune picked up a simple white one with two golden arcs on the back of it. He pulled up pictures and stared intently at them, as a few pieces of memories flowed back.
He was Jaune Arc, only son of the Arc family, youngest child of eight children. Team Leader of JNPR, Brother in all but Blood to the Hylian Champion Link...
"LINK!" Jaune shouted as the others jumped, startled by the sudden shout from Jaune from their own investigations of their Sheikah Scrolls. Jaune looked panicked as he counted over the people in the room intently, and a pit settled in his gut.
"Where's Link..." He quietly asked as tears stung his eyes.
"Jaune..." The voice said, speaking not in his head, but seemingly in the air itself now, "Link, the former Hylian Champion, fell in battle. His Darkness-Sealing Sword chose you as it's next wielder. You are the heir to the title of Hylian Champion, but you are not alone in that regards...you ALL are Champions of Hyrule, the Light that is so desperately needed now." A door opened as they revealed outfits and names started coming back to Jaune. Ruby was dressed in a ragtag red shirt and pants with a rose on the back of the shirt. He wore a white version with two golden arcs on the back, a triangular symbol on his right hand he covered by a glove.
Pyrrha wore a bronze colored outfit, Nora wore pink, and Lie Ren wore green. Yang had yellow with a black flame shaped like a heart, Blake had black, and Weiss had white with a silver snowflake on the back. The Goron named Daruk had a blue Tunic, as did Mipha the Zora, Revali the Rito, and blue shirt and pants were worn by Urbosa the Gerudo. A door on the other side of the room opened and they each shielded their eyes as the light from the outside world flooded the room and blinded them momentarily. Eventually, they all blinked the spots out of their eyes as they adjusted to the light and climbed (or in Revali's case, flew) up a small ledge and ran to the outside. The tall grass tickled against their legs, as their threadbare clothing did nothing to properly protect them from the elements of nature.
They each stood on a ledge on a plateau overlooking a land stretching as far as the eye could see. A large volcano loomed in the distance among gigantic mountains, trees and plains were spread far and wide with marshes and lakes. In the middle of it, a large castle somewhat run down with pieces of it collapsed with darkness swirling all around it. Whatever was in there, it gave an aura of fear and hostility to everyone looking at it.
"Someone's been neglecting the repair bills." Revali snarkily remarked, trying to break the tension. Jaune opened his mouth, only to shut it as he remembered his brother's words "When all eyes are on me, I find it necessary to silently bear the burdens." Echoed through his mind. Well, that and "It might help to pick up everything you can into your inventory bags, you'll never know when it will come in handy later."
"I know I may not remember much, but you seem troubled." Pyrrha said, "What's wrong Jaune?"
"Link...My Brother...one of my few memories is of when he died...I...I don't feel like talking about it." He said. An uneasy silence spread across the group of those words. They had all been close to Link, somehow, if these pictures of them posing together with him and a Hylian princess were correct. Yet, to have one of your few remaining memories being someone die in front of your eyes had to be really jarring.
"Jaune..." Ruby said, "That man, his voice told me that you and I were both team leaders. RWBY and JNPR he called them. That means that the sword that he made sound like a big deal HAS to be important somehow."
"Yeah Fearless Leader!" Nora shouted at a cheerful voice, which Jaune found odd since she didn't remember everything; and not having all his memories made him upset at the thought of forgetting something or someone important, "That Sword is the Sword of a Hero! Now let's go break legs!"
Jaune let out a little chuckle, Nora's attitude and words strangely familiar.
From the bottom of a hill, a strange man covered in a dark black hood with tanned skin and a fluffy white beard stared at them, a spark of hope lighting up in the man's brown eyes.
"They've awakened...Light will shine on Hyrule once more..." He said, before sitting down at a fire.
Hyrule now had hope once more.
