Prologue: The Fork in the End of the Road
The Iifa Tree was crumbling. The team had to find their way out. After narrowly escaping the clutch of emptiness, the team was able to be crushed under tons of debris. Scurrying to the Invincible, the team was able to escape. All but one...and his brother…
Zidane and Kuja lie atop the branches of the decaying Iifa Tree. Both exhausted, panting heavily, they were almost unable to move.
"Why…did you save me…" asked Kuja. The pain could be felt through his voice, a voice once mighty and strong, yet so delicate and weak now.
"Heh…why not…we are…brothers, after all…" responded Zidane, looking up at what little sky could be seen through the dead branches of the giant tree.
"Zidane…I know I don't have much longer…please…" Kuja was cut off by the rustling of the branches above. A giant rumble startled the two exhausted brothers. Zidane attempted to get up but fell backwards, almost falling off the little padding that the branches provided. A shriek echoed through the air, and the branches lunged at the two. Zidane threw himself in front of Kuja.
2 years later.
"My lady…no word on his whereabouts," said the lady general. Her auburn hair flowed radiantly, yet her aura was a sad one. The melancholy of this news made her skin lighter. From the light, a slight belly could be shown.
"I…expected as much…thank you anyway, Beatrix," the Queen was looking out of her window. The sunlight reflected off of her tears that she tried desperately to hide from the lady general.
"Steiner and his men are searching day and night throughout what is left of the Iifa Tree. I will report to you later in the week." At that, Beatrix left with a salute. The Queen continued to look out her window, closing her eyes after minutes went by.
"Zidane…please…come back to me…"
At the Iifa Tree, two days later.
"Knights of Pluto, report!" Steiner bellowed in the air.
"Nothing new, sir!" cried out Kohel and Dojebon.
"Same as before, sir!" cried out Weinar and Haagen.
"Dammit!" yelled out Steiner, failing to the floor on his knees. He whispered to himself "Zidane, please be alive…let the Queen see you at least once more…let me see you once more…" He stood up after a moment, dusting himself off. His armor gleamed in the light.
"SIR! SIR! I FOUND SOMETHING!" exclaimed Meigentheim, clamoring over to Steiner's position. "A HAND!"
The Knights of Pluto and their Captain clamored over to where Meigentheim had been. A hand stuck out of a giant pile of intertwined branches. Steiner, without thought, began wrestling with the branches to dig deeper, to uncover what was underneath. Time passed as the Knights watched their Captain grunt and fight with the giant branches. Finally, the source of the hand was unearthed.
"No…dead God, no…" Steiner looked in horror at the body that lye before him. He stared into the dead eyes of his fallen comrade. He fell at the sight of his dead friend and ally, Zidane.
Off in the distant, a Queen's heart was broken.
Author's Note: Hopefully this will turn into something. This beginning chapter is very uneventful, just setting the tone of the story to come. I have a lot of ideas for this work, so hopefully many people read it! Stay tuned for the first chapter!
