Setsuna and Sara, the Morning After

Sara's sweet heart hummed against his chest, and he wished it were humanly possible to draw her even closer still, so that song could blare loudly in his ears and drown out all else. But it wasn't, and he had to content himself to the limits of their closeness, their love: the way their bodies melted together so that the limbs splayed under covers could not be assigned to one or the other of them.

Maybe if he'd been asleep the song would have filled his ears and echoed in the recedes of his brain. But the thin streams of sunlight forcing its way through holes in the curtains had awoken him. And other things crept in: the uncomfortable sheets that had grown crisp overnight, the occasional creaks of the bed and the howling wind outside. The sweat on both their bodies that had dried and left his skin feeling stretched, and that uncomfortable feeling between his legs that was both unconsciousness and a begging for more…

But Sara was still asleep, curled up with one arm slung over his waist and his ear was pressed under her breasts, where he could hear her heart beating strong. And that sound was precious to him, with how long he'd gone without being able to hear it so close. He nuzzled a little closer to her, trying to drown out the sound of the rest of the world. He thought he could hear some voices too. He hoped not. Voices never said anything good, if they weren't Sara. They just whispered of sins and dirtiness…

But, so close to Sara, that didn't matter. The proof of the purity in their love echoed in her beating heart, in the feeling of warmth and euphoria that still echoed in his mind. Even if it was the morning after and other things were starting to creep in.

Once Sara opened her eyes, they could set that right again and blot out the world once more.
