Disclamer: This is just a little back story to why Louis can play the bugle. (Which I think is great coz in Poole Sea Cadet's band I am the lead bugler!) I don't own it though.

The Bugle,

Louis sat on his bed, long after his mother had thought him asleep slowly polishing the bugle. His father had given it to him for his birthday and it matched the one his father carried into battle. He'd even taught him how to play the armies bugle calls, even a few navy one like Colours and Sunset. But now his father was gone and the bugle and uniform the only thing Louis had to remember him by for his mother kept the only photo of him in her room.
"I thought you were asleep" Anna said smiling as Louis looked up suddenly. Her smile disappeared when she saw he was polishing the bugle, something he always did when he was upset and wanted his father. She went over to him and sat on the bed next to him. Gently she put her arm around him and pulled the cloth from his fingers "I miss him too" she whispered.
"Why did he have to die? It's not fair" Louis mumbled sadly, pressing his face into his mothers shoulder. "I had a dream that he was alive and we were still in India, but when I woke up he was gone and we were here" Louis said tearfully.
"Oh my Louis, he is here. In our hearts, in our memory's, even in your bugle. Yes I remember all too well how often you 2 would take you bugles and practise. I was often afraid you'd confuse some poor soldier into thinking there was actually a battle going on" Anna said laughing slightly.
"I remember that if I was at all bored he'd stop whatever he was doing and play the bugle with me" Louis said sadly. "Why did he have to die?" he started top sob frantically and Anna pulled the bugle out of his grasp, put it behind her on the bed and pulled him into her arms, rocking him gently and rubbing soothing circles on his back.
"Everyone dies, but only God can decide when and to what purpose. Your father died bravely, on a mission to scout out the enemy and with the enemy he and his companion brought back the battle was won" Anna said quietly as Louis's sobs started to quieten.
"I wish he hadn't died" Louis whispered before falling asleep, exhausted from his fitful crying and the late hour. Anna gently put him to bed, kissing his forehead as she tucked him in. His hands reached out for something and she watched as he found the bugle and hugged it, still completely asleep.
"I wish he hadn't died too, I wish so too."

A/N There you go, review if you want to. I've just finished another day of bloody GCSE's, Maths and History today, woo! But I have no more exams until next Tuesday so I should be grateful. I'm gonna order 'Little Men' from MVC in Poole tomorrow, I really want to see that movie!
