Well, I guess now everybody has what they want.
Bobby returned to his apartment after finishing the paperwork on the Tagman case. Something was bothering him. It had been eating away at him since early on in the case. But he had only figured out what when they learned of Tagman's death back in Carver's office. He related to Tagman.
Damn! That explained everything! Why he had blown up at Carver and Deakins about Death Row, why he knew exactly how to read Tagman without thinking it out, why he felt so comfortable around Tagman himself, why had gone the extra mile to get him to confess, and why he felt so betrayed by Eames.
Of all the people! Of all of them who could piss him off, Eames was the last one he ever expected! How could she do it? Why did she do it! Fuck! Why! It had been an unnecessary comment! One that was cold, almost calculated. Even Carver, the bastard, had paused to let her comment wash over him. Well, I guess now everybody has what they want.
She couldn't have done it on purpose, could she? She was the only person he felt he could trust unconditionally. But now… Was there even a now? A deep rumble escaped his mouth, one of pure rage, hatred, sorrow and grief. What had prompted her to say it? Sure she was the only neutral one to witness the argument, but still, comments from the peanut gallery weren't required. And in this case, weren't appreciated.
He wanted to trust her still, wanted her to be a part of his life. But now… Now! Ahh, fuck! Sometimes it was hard enough living knowing that so few people knew and accepted him. And the one person he could count on, the one person who had saved his ass countless times had betrayed him with one bitter statement. Well, I guess now everybody has what they want.
She could have done it the quick and painless way. All she had to do was take out her gun and shoot him straight through the heart. He would have gotten the message! But no, oh no. That was too simple. She had to brand his mind with her opinion. He could have left! He didn't need, nor want to hear it. If she hated him so much, why not change partners? It had happened before! She could do it again! God knows he was use to his partners bailing out on him. But not this…not this.
He was Tagman. Subconsciously he had to have known about it since finding the first victim. He too wanted someone who he could hold, someone he could love, someone who would love him. Just because he was different, just because John Tagman was different, did not mean that they should be left out in the cold. It was people like them who could love the best. It was giving love that they lived for. Love seen only when a puppy looks at his new owner, when a newborn first looks at his mother. Love so innocent and pure that nothing should be allowed to stop it.
But it had been stopped. Society wanted strong men, not sensitive ones. And that left Tagman and Bobby shit out of luck. The only difference between the two was that while Bobby was doing his best getting lost in the minds of criminals and trying to forget about the problem, Tagman was trying to circumvent society to conquer it. And now Tagman was dead. Killed in a way that nobody, no matter how malicious, should be killed. Even worse was the knowledge that Tagman's wants and needs would be cruelly ignored. No one would love him, even in death. No one wanted someone like that. Someone like Bobby.
Well, I guess now everybody has what they want. She was wrong. Tagman's last right—the right of love—was betrayed. And so was Bobby's.
