"How could they understand? They call me selfless but do they really
understand?" She thought as trailed her fingers through the clear serene
water of the spring she sat next to as she contemplated her situation. The
ripples marring her reflection, the cold water making her sorrowful face
resemble that of Kikyo's even more. A face of pain and burden.
She had run off after Kikyo had once again entered their lives on their search for the shards. And once again Inuyasha had gazed at her with such an obvious longing that Kagome felt as if her heart would surely shatter into a million pieces from invisible hand that held it in a merciless grip. The moments that she had seen them with their eyes locked onto each other desperately trying to lock out the world that had unfairly torn them apart spoken volumes that Kagome just couldn't ignore. Not that she had ever been able to. She had always seen the distance in Inuyasha's eyes. As if part of him were never really there, as if part of him were always living in the past with Kikyo.
She would never be able to claim that part of him, but she just couldn't leave him. As long as there were happy times, times of contentment, times when she could bring even a little joy into the hanyou's eyes or help even a little she wouldn't be able to leave him. No matter how many tears she had to shed.
In a way it was selfish of her to cling to Inuyasha so desperately. She had no claims to him, after all Kikyo had given him her life, and now even in death followed him. But as long as there were happy times she would stay with him, and maybe even allow herself to hope.
No not hope, the emotions that shimmered in those amber eyes and they looked into Kikyo's cold grey ones left no room for hope. There was no room for her in his heart and his life was already belonged to Kikyo. She had heard him say it himself. And yet she still could not bring herself to leave him, she would never be able to leave his side.
"OI! Wench! What are you thinking wandering off by yourself like that?!?! We need to go look for more shards!"
Kagome breathed a heavy sigh, and tried to smile to hide all of the emotions that rushed through her, leaving her drained and sorrowful. He would never know, never understand. But then again, maybe it was for the best, maybe all she could do was try to brighten his life a little while he let her.
