Everyone Leaves

Zach and Cammie stood on the dock, just staring. He watched as the waves rose and fell slowly. He closed his eyes and basked in the sun and the smell of the ocean. He wouldn't have much more time with Cammie before he had to leave again.

Cammie glanced at him and then at the ocean. She didn't want him to leave. She wanted him to herself, but that was impossible. It just couldn't happen when they both had things they had to do that were in different parts of the world.

"I don't want you to leave," she whispered. He sighed.

"It's not like I want to leave either, Gallagher Girl, but I have to. I can't stay when I have…things to do. There's people I need to help and, don't take this personally, but you can't be there. That's just the rules," he said. She looked at the boy next to her.

"I understand, Zach, but I was just hoping you wouldn't have to leave so soon," she said. "You've only been here for two days and there's still a week of vacation. Why do you have to leave so early?"

"I can't tell you. Believe me, if I could, I would, but I just can't. It could hurt someone. I'm sorry, Cam, but you'll just have to hold that yearning for when we meet again. Believe me, we will meet again," he said. He turned to him and she realized he was smiling. A smile slowly spread over her face.

"How soon?" she asked, taking his hand. He shrugged and looked out over the water. She had the feeling that even though his body was here, he was somewhere far away.

"I don't know. A month, two, a year. I don't know for sure, but I'll make sure we see each other again, even if we aren't able to talk," he said, looking back at her. "Just because you don't see me, Gallagher Girl, it doesn't mean that I'm not there. People aren't always what they appear to be."

"Disguises. But how will we talk then? I don't want to just see you, Zach, I want to hear you," she said desperately. He kissed her forehead and slipped his arm around her waist.

"Sometimes you just have to deal with it. The say, when life gives you lemons you make lemonades? That's what you have to put into play here. You just have to deal with whatever life throws at you and hope it's for the best. Just because we may not see each other for awhile, doesn't mean I'm not okay. Sure, it can mean I'm not, but there's a pretty good chance that I'm okay."

"Will you at least text me?" she whispered. He shrugged. "Email?"

"I don't know. I have rules I have to follow too, but I'll try to get in contact. Even if it's a sentence, Cam, it's a sign that I'm okay and that I miss you," he said and pulled her to his chest.

"It's not fair," she muttered into his chest. He laughed slightly.

"Life's not fair, Cam, but we have to deal, don't we?" he said. She stepped back and smiled before she kissed his lips.
