One last moment in the dark

She'd had doubts before, but never this strong. It was the night before it was supposed to happen, the night before hers and Morgause's dreams would finally come true. The next day Morgana would be Queen and nothing and no-one could stop it from happening. Except maybe herself.

She felt guilty for having those thoughts, because betraying Morgause just wasn't an option after everything her sister had done for her and especially not after all the things the people here at Camelot had done to her – or would do to her if they ever found out she possessed magic.

And yet, she couldn't stop thinking about Arthur. She tried to remember all the times he had arrested those accused of sorcery and stood idly by, when they were executed for their crimes. He had just as much blood on his hands as his father, Morgana told herself, to no avail.

For every bad memory she could come up with, she also had to remember his attempts to save someone, make Uther see reason or even the time he had conspired with her to save the young boy, Mordred.

But she had no choice. She couldn't just decide that Arthur's life was worth more than the lives of god knows how many innocent people. It was far too late to change her mind anyway.

In moments like these, Morgana really wished she could just stop thinking and go to sleep. Instead, she kept pacing in her chamber, but soon found the small room to be suffocating. After she left it behind, it was not long before she found herself standing in front of the door to Arthur's room.

For a moment Morgana hesitated. What good would it do to visit him? Surely it would only make things harder.

In spite of that, she still entered, without even knocking. Arthur was already in bed, sound asleep. Just then, he looked so peaceful. If he only knew how soon that would have to change.

Quietly, Morgana slipped to his side, her hand reaching out to his face. His eyes instantly flew open and stared at her, full of surprise.

"Morgana! What are you doing here at this hour?"

She didn't answer him. Instead, she sat down on the edge of his bed. Some might have considered it inappropriate, but Morgana could not care less at that moment. As always, he was rather impatient and her strange behavior seemed to unnerve him enough to make him concerned.

"Are you alright? Did you have another one of those nightmares? Should I maybe send for Gaius?"

She shook her head at that.

"No."

"Morgana…"

She suddenly grasped his hand.

"Something is going to happen and I'm sorry."

"What do you mean?" Of course he didn't – couldn't – understand what she meant.

Before he could say another word, she leaned forward. Their lips touched only for a few brief moments, but to Morgana it felt as if the world stood still. But it couldn't last forever. When she ended their embrace, her eyes gleamed golden and her enchantment made him go back to sleep almost instantly.

"I love you", she whispered, before leaving him and her heart behind in the dark room.
