It was Christmas Eve, and it was snowing heavily outside, although it was quite a beautiful sight. It was late in the evening, and the sun had already set a number of hours ago, but the Christmas lights set up throughout the streets made it look absolutely stunning, although there were other things distracting Bond from enjoying such a beautiful evening.
Bond, again, sat alone in his flat, in the dark, left to his thoughts.
He hadn't even set up a Christmas tree this year, or any decorations of any kind, for that matter. What was the point? Year after year, he sat alone in his flat, doing the same thing. The other agents had family. Hell, even M had family she could resort to visiting on Christmas. Bond, on the other hand, had no one. He had no one left.
Year after year, Bond was left to spend Christmas alone. This year wasn't any different. He wasn't given any Christmas gifts, no Christmas cards, not even a bloody phone call.
M had sent him home that night, without an assignment. She told him to take a break, and enjoy himself for once. Enjoy the holidays, in any way he could. And, that was what Bond had planned on doing. Sometime throughout the evening, he sat down on the couch, and that's where he ended up staying the rest of the evening.
Bond lifted the glass to his lips, and slowly took a sip of the strong alcohol. He'd already lost count of how many glasses he had, though it didn't really matter, anyhow. His thoughts swam. Maybe it was because of the drinks he'd had. Maybe it was just because he was lonely.
But, what else was there for him to do?
"Nothing," He thought to himself.
For a moment, he thought about the others. His friends… His family.
Maybe it was meant to be this way. Maybe Bond was meant to be alone… He shook his head.
"Being alone is a bloody choice… A choice that I didn't make." He thought to himself. "So, why am I alone?" He sighed, realizing he said that out loud.
Suddenly, his cell phone rang, causing him to jump as it broke the silence. He dropped his glass as he jumped, and cursed softly, as he walked towards the kitchen counter, where he'd left his phone. Without checking the caller ID, Bond answered the call, and put the phone to his ear.
"Bond." He said, firmly.
"Bond, its M…" There was a pause. Bond was surprised to hear from M, although he'd been looking forward to what she had to say. Bond could hear her sigh into the phone, which made him chuckle softly. "It occurred to me that you left earlier, and I didn't have a chance to say…" There was another sigh, before she continued. "Merry Christmas, Bond."
Bond smiled, hearing her say this. "Merry Christmas to you too, M." He replied.
There was a long, awkward pause, although both of them were aware that the other was still on the other end.
"Well… I'll see you tomorrow, then. I have your next assignment." M said.
Bond nodded, "Alright, then. Tomorrow it is." Bond replied. "Have a good night." He said, politely.
"Same to you." M replied, softly.
Bond hung up first, and shut the phone back down on the counter. He chuckled lightly as he thought about what just happened. Who would've thought M would be the first – and only – person to wish him a merry Christmas?
Either way, it made him smile. You could even say it made his evening. He'd have to repay her some time… How, he had no idea, but he'd make sure he did.
"Maybe Christmas isn't as bad as I thought." He said softly, and chuckled, shaking his head.
"Thank you, M"
I meant to upload this before Christmas, but with the holidays, everything got really hectic. Anyways, enjoy, and happy holidays! :)
