Prelude
The rain spat feebly down upon the barren ruin where London had once stood. Dust swept through the air, caught up by the wind. In the distance you could have just made out an approaching electrical storm and beyond that, a red sun was setting, pouring the last of the day's light over the desolate landscape.
A metallic figure stalked its way through the flaming rubble. There was nimble elegance to its movements and as it reached the point in the rubble that was highest, it stopped. It turned, scanning the area, then stopped. It crouched down, looking at something near the bottom of the hill. Looking behind itself, it called 'There's something Down there' and four more figures skulked out from behind collapsed buildings.
The Five figures, left the rubble of the building and jumped onto a muddy patch that might once have been a park. One of the figures bent down examining the ground. There was a thick trail of glassy dust leading onwards. "It's been here" Said the figure to one of its colleges. The figures crowded around the dust trail. One Figure, clearly the leader pushed to the front. It reached up and removed his helmet to reveal a cropped cut of pitch black hair.
She stood up and looked at something down at the bottom of the hill, something the others hadn't noticed. Then she broke into a run, without a word to the others, who were left standing perplexed by the dust. She jumped over a felled tree and skidded to a halt when she reached watch she'd seen.
The Others caught up to their leader and stopped. When they saw what it was they reached up and removed their helmets as well.
Bernice Summerfield stood up and turned slowly to face her team.
"We're too late" she said, holding up the charred umbrella "He's Dead!"
She turned her head back to the body and all five figures stared at the corpse of the Doctor.

(may contain spoilers)
This is a novelisation of the planned 30th anniversary story that never saw the light of day. It features the Fourth Doctor in an alternate timeline in which he never regenerated. It had the companions Ace and the Brigadier as well as a character named "Summerfield" who is Bernice Summerfield from the Virgin New adventures. This book of the story expands upon the script by adding new characters, subplots, scenes, etc for the main purpous of expanding the roles of the other Doctors
