Prologue

November 6th, 2022, 12:57 PM.

I stared at the clock, twitching with anticipation. I tried to stay calm but I was far too excited. I had moved to Japan six years ago, after my grandmother died. I lived with my best friend, since… well… as long as I can remember actually. Over time we had both developed a love and a passion for both comics and videogames. He mostly associated with The Batman, his favorite character out of any comic book. While I, on the other hand, liked the Joker above any other comic character.

He sat on his bed, which was across the room from mine. He glanced at the clock… 12:59 PM. He looked at me and gave a slight nod, signaling that it was time. I gave him a Joker-like smile and we both put on our NerveGear helmets. We simultaneously lied back on our beds. The clock switched to 13:00 PM. It was time. He said my name, "Hey Trey…", he waited. I looked at him. "See you on the other side", he said, giving a thumbs up. "Not if I see you first Mike", I replied. As if our minds were one, we both at the exact same time blurted out, "Link Start!".

Everything went white as our minds were pulled into the game. An array of color came shooting at me from out of nowhere. It was incredible. Then, a female voice called out, "Welcome to Sword Art Online!", and a chill went throughout my entire body. Michael, or Mike as I call him, had played several other VRMMO's, mostly comic related. Unbeknownst to Mike, I was one of the beta testers for the game. I looked at my character in the menu and smiled. It highly resembled the Joker as played by the late Heath Ledger. A window popped up in front of me. It was the language selection. Michael had taught me Japanese and I was fairly fluent, but for the heck of it, I chose 'English' as the default language. I then pressed the 'Continue' icon and my whole body was thrust into a white light.

When I opened my eyes, I was in the middle of a giant plaza, The Town of Beginnings. "Yo!",called out a familiar voice. I turned to see Michael standing next to me. Much to my surprise, he had created his character to look almost identical to The Batman. I looked at his gamertag which, of course, read 'The Bat'. My gamertag read 'Joker', not surprising. We both shared a laugh as more player spawned in. We were both full of wonder and excitement, but little did we know that our celebration would be short lived.
