Disclaimer: Okay, I KNOW this does not fit into the continuity of ANY of the stories, but having Mothman Prophecies soundtrack for so long has made me need to write this. This is the closest I have gotten to a songfic i the traditional sense, and I apologize if Mazzy sounds a bit too german, I dont have any reference books, so I'm trying to talk with one half of my face and a limp tongue to copy her, and is that ever HARD. The title is the title of the songwhich the man sings at intervals, and it is on the Mothman Prophecies soundtrack, I had to decipher the lyrics myself, so dont be too picky if you think I'm wrong. Mazzy belongs to Sandman/Vertigo comics, and that about covers it,except for a personal note: check out the work of an artist called Ryuya.

Half Life

He wandered, as he had for so many days, in an alley. The sky was dark, and rain was beginning to threaten passerby. A bluish glow consumed everything in sight. He looked up at the sky, the only light from the old streetlamps, busy with moths, for the stars were not out yet. He wondered if they'd ever be out. "Someone, listen to me." He cried, staggering out a ways from the little alleyway. No one stopped. He retreated back into the covered alley as the rain fell, hard as daggers and merciless onto the people out so late. He slid his legs up underneath him. "I went to Hell and killed the Devil, and now I cant tell time. Nothing seems to really change that much. Is there no hope for mankind?"

A woman appeared on the outside of the alleyway, too far to make out individual features, but she had a red cloak, soaked by the torrent, too wet for her to have only been out for a few minutes. She turned her head towards him. A slip of white covered half of her face. She said nothing. He ignored her, as he so often did when he percieved someone was making a mockery of him, and returned to his muttering. "All I want is to believe in love, why do you think Ive lost my mind...Im not an angel, do you believe?"

"Yesh." He turned at the sudden sound to meet the woman, who had managed to comeseveral feet into the shelter without him noticing. "Do you believe?" Heasked, clinging to what little information sanity had left him. "Yesh, I berieve eu."

"I went to Hell and killed the devil, why do you think I've lost my mind?"

"Eu've treshpashed ento shings mortals shouldnt mesh wif." She said, regarding him with a calculating look in that one eye, alook that held indignation, knowledge, and sorrow. "All I want is to believe in love, is there no hope for mankind?" He asked, not really expecting this strange woman to answer him much more.

"Not enymore." Her voice held such bitterness, he was momentarily taken aback. "Dont hate me for long, I know I've been wrong." He apologized. And it was true, he was just now beginning to see what he had truly done. He looked down. "Im not an angel, do you believe?"

"Ie know eu arent en enger. Zhey wuldnt deshtroie zher sho carred perferct barance by duing zhat." He remained looking downward. "I went to Hell and killed the Devil.." He murmured.

"Ie know eu did! Vhy? Vhy di eu do zhat? Eu've dishturbed zhe barance uf creashion!" She closed her eye. A solitary tear fell down her cheek. "I ruved him.."

He looked up. "Who are you?" She studied him for a moment, but her gaze lacked intensity now, replaced by something more terrifying to him-hopeless resignation. "I'm Mashikeen."

"Mazikeen?" He repeated, somehow not afraid in the least. "I've heard of you." He fell silent. "So now what do I do?" She shrugged. "What are you going to do?"

"Rait. I shar rait."

"For what?"

"For Everyshing and noshing. For zhe end. her ish noshing erse for me now."

He nodded. "Theres nothing else for me, either."

"Eu have a harf rife now." She stated. He looked up at the sky. She walked off. He had nothing else to do. So he repeated his plea. "I went to Hell and killed the Devil...I went to Hell and killed the Devil..."
