"The League of Nations was a failure in the end due to many factors. One of these was the fact that the United States of America, whose president proposed the said organization, did not become a member." explained Mr. Perryhouse monotonously, "Another point was…" Aya drifted in and out of history class as she fought against her tiredness.

"Sleeping Aya?" a voice asked. Aya raised her head slowly, drool dripping freely from her chin. "What…Van…?" She responded drowsily. Chuckling, Van carried her with exaggerated effort. "You're heavy." He teased. Now fully awake, Aya struggled to break free.

"Van don't! I have to-"

"Hold on tight!" Sprouting pastel white wings from his back, Van jumped off from the second floor window and flew into the heavens.

"Van! You can't do this! I have to get back to class!" Aya insisted.

"And do what? Sleep? No," Van argued forcefully. Looking down at the pale face before him regaining its colour, he sighed, calming down. He tried again to explain his reason softly and succeeded, "You need to take a break." Sensing her giving in, Van grinned, "Now let's have some fun!" He threw the teenage girl in to the air.

"Van!" Aya screamed. As quickly as she felt the warm arms beneath her leave, they came back and enveloped around her securely.

"Don't do that!" She cried out in delight. Whenever Aya felt like falling through the bottomless hole of hopelessness, Van would always be there to pull her to safety. And even though she tried to deny his help, he would find a way to smother her excuses for which she was grateful for. Hearing a voice in the distance, Aya shook her head to clear her thoughts.

"I'm sorry, what was that again Van?"

Shaking his head ruefully, he commented, "Even when you're daydreaming, your mind still somehow drifts off to another world at the same time. Sometimes I wonder if you'd rather be somewhere else." Seeing tinges of crimson grace her light cheeks, Van laughed in relief. "I'm just kidding!" He reassured her, then taking on a serious tone he continued, "I asked if you were feeling better?"

"Yes I am!" Aya admitted, feeling full of life.

"That's great because we're back and I have to go now."

Aya realized that she was once again sitting in her desk with Professor Perryhouse's mouth moving like a fish with no sound coming out. Van kneeled down in front of Aya and touched her hand. "Take care of yourself. I don't know if I can visit you every time." His face contorted with concern and a hint of frustration. Aya squeezed his hand, "But if I took care of myself too well, you wouldn't be able to come at all right?" Van, missing the joke, tensed. Aya's hands on his face startled him. Murky, chocolate brown meeting sparkling sea green eyes filled with amusement. "I'm just kidding! I can't forget about you that easily silly!" Van beamed and gave her head a noogie, "You got that right!" With that, Van disappeared. Aya smiled contently, her mind clear and open, ready to listen to Professor Perryhouse's droning voice. "…the fact that originally, Germany and Russia were not members of the League. Since the United States of America's refusal, the League lacked the morale."
