(Quick author note - I really have no idea what I'm doing. I just recently decided to try my hand at writing and I really love me some Haikyuu. Kuroo is by far my favorite ever, so please bare with me and hopefully this is not too awkward. Ok anyways feel free to leave reviews. I would love some feedback to know if I am on the right track. Hope you enjoy. Disclaimer - I do not own Haikyuu).
(Additional note: I love the idea of a multi-universe, so I plan on doing some spin-offs with the additional love interests. I'm a big softy and everyone deserves some love.)
Toka glared at the phone in her hand the knot firmly in place in her stomach. She knew that she should just call Toru and get it over with. The problem was that she just didn't know where to start. How was she supposed to tell him that she wasn't going to Aobo Johsai anymore and had transferred to Karasuno? It was probably, well more than probably, going to give him a stroke. It wasn't like she could tell him that her step sister hated her and the rest of the girls' volleyball team treated her…well… decent enough. It was more like they put up with her because of her skill at volleyball.
She never understood why her step sister, Aiko, hated her. Not really anyways. She assumed it was because Aiko was jealous of the way Toru would devote all of his attention to Toka when she came to visit. It also, probably didn't help that her youngest brother was also strongly attached to her. They just couldn't help. Toka was like a magnet to them with her cheerful demeanor and Toru had always looked after her since the day she was born.
She remembered being elated when her mother had decided to let her attend high school at Aobo Johsai. She would finally get to live close to Toru, her closest friend, and she would finally get to play on a girls' volleyball team. The junior high she had attended didn't have a girls' team, so she had settled for being the manager of the boys' team. She was lucky enough that they let her practice with them, but it was never really fulfilling enough. Yes she got to practice, but it wasn't the same as being on a team and actually playing in games.
Her first of year of high school was only tolerable because Toru and Hajime had been there. She had barely stayed at the apartment she had with Aiko, the one that her parents had graciously set up for them. She preferred to spend most of her days and nights chasing after her brother and his best friend. Sleeping on the couch at the apartment he shared with Hajime had been pleasant if not sometimes uncomfortable, but it felt like home. She even spent most of her practice time with the boys' team and only practiced with the girls' team out of necessity.
Toru and Hajime weren't there anymore though. They had both moved onto universities and she couldn't bear the thought of spending the rest of her high school years near her step sister, so she had decided that she wouldn't. She moved back in with her dad and the only school close enough to get to on foot was Karasuno. She wasn't too worried about going there. Her last name wasn't Oikawa as she had taken her step-father's last name. No one there should know she was Toru's sister right off the bat and if they did oh well. It couldn't be worse than Aobo Johsai could it?
She was also looking forward to seeing Kei and Tadashi again. She hadn't seen or talked to them since she was the manager of their team in junior high. She was particular excited to see Kei. He was one of the only boys that hadn't asked her out and actually tried to be her friend. She always thought he was cute, but after watching him play last year on Karasuno her attraction had only grown. Tall, glasses and gorgeous with just the right amount of salt.
All of these thoughts kept running wild through her mind and her nerves were nearly shot. Somehow she would have to boil all of her thoughts down to a coherent explanation that didn't end up ratting out her step sister. She was so lost in her thoughts that she almost fell out of her bed when her phone rang. It startled the bejeebies out of her. She was pretty sure she knew who was calling because only one person really called her. She looked down at the screen and saw Toru's picture. Light fluffy brown hair, tongue sticking out and fingers in the shape of peace sign. Yep. There he was.
She had expected the call eventually to hear about his first day of classes and volleyball practice. He had already filled her in on his new dorm room and his roommate with the worst case of bed hair that Toru had ever seen. Turns out his roommate was Kuroo Tetsuro from Nekoma's volleyball team. Toru seemed to like Tetsuro which was actually pretty good since Hajime had went to a different university. Toru without Hajime was almost unthinkable. How they managed to be separated still baffled her.
She took a deep breath. The phone had been ringing a while now and she could just imagine Toru freaking out on the other side. She answered the phone.
"Toka-chan why did it take you so long to answer? I've been waiting to talk to you all day!" Toru whined in her ear.
"Toru calm down. Don't you want to tell me about your first day of class?" she said trying to distract him. It worked. It always worked.
"Toka-chan, it was the best! I woke up super early…" he continued rambling cheerfully for a solid 30 minutes. She would occasionally add a sentence or two when it was required, but mostly stayed silent building up her courage. Toru finally noticed that his sister was being less than enthusiastic about his first day. He paused for a moment. "Toka-chan are you alright? You seem awfully quiet tonight?" Dammit Toka thought. Her brother really did know her.
"Toru, there is something I need to tell you and I don't want you to freak out" she started. There was no going back now. She wanted to get it over with, so she decided to just say it. "I'm not going to Aobo Johsai this year for school. I've transferred to Karasuno." The silence stretched out.
"WHAT!?" her brother cried out in the phone. Tetsuro could hear him through the walls of their dorm and he looked towards his bedroom door curiously. He knew Toru had been excited to talk to his beloved sister after volleyball practice. It was all the pretty setter talked about on the way home. Sounded like it wasn't going so well. "You're going to Karasuno? As in the Karasuno that I hate?"
"Toru calm down" she said trying to bring her brother back off of the cliff. "It was the right choice. I couldn't go to Aobo Johsai without you and our parents didn't want to pay for another apartment, so I moved back in with dad." She was trying to explain to her brother as best as she could, but he wasn't really listening to her.
"OH MY GOD! Did you go there just so you could be with Tobio-chan?" he demanded into the phone.
"What? No. Why would you even think that?" she had not been expecting him to jump to that conclusion.
"Because you're in love with him" Toru whined.
"I am not in love with Kageyama" she sighed. How did they even get on this topic?
"Yes you are" he whined again. "You're always talking about how good looking he is and what a brilliant setter he is. I saw how your eyes twinkled after they won last year. How could you betray me like this Toka-chan!? You're such a traitor."
"For the last time I am not in love with Kageyama. Karasuno was just the closest school to home and it made the most sense."
"You're an awful liar Toka-chan" he pouted into the phone. He had a point she wasn't being entirely truthful about why she was going to Karasuno and of course Toru would pick up on it. However, he was wrong at his conclusion that it was because of Kageyama. "I'm never talking to you again." With that he hung up his phone.
Wait. What? She didn't expect him to hang up on her. She spent the rest of the night trying to call him back, but it went straight to voicemail every time.
