The Lie She Tells Herself So She Can Sleep

It's a lie when she says she can stop this anytime. She can't. It's gone past the point where either of them can put a pause on this thing without causing damage. They're attached by an umbilical cord of violent lust and greed.

She likes to feel him inside her as she wraps her legs around his waist, holding on to his arms. He is the dark she was afraid of as a child and seduced by as a girl. By the end of school, the darkness had caught her and he was waiting, fresh from initiation, the Dark Mark surrounded by red irritated skin.

The first time had been against a dirty wall in Knockturn Alley. He'd taunted her, whispered things in her ear that should've made her want to curse him. She'd only laughed at him and grasped his arm, watching as he flinched and bit his lip.

Even though she knows she cannot stop, she knows that one day it will have to end. The war is at its climax, the deciding battle is close. Soon the victor will be decided and one of them will die because he cannot live in a world of complete light and she cannot live in a world of complete darkness.

She already feels the loss when she pauses to think of the future. Before she allows it overwhelm her, she pushes the thought away for another day. She tells herself that she can stop, ignoring the hurt that is slowly finding its way into the comforting dark.
