This was for the 2014 Connie Springer week on Tumblr Day #3 - Letters. I organized that week but I was lazy and didn't do all the days, no excuse... I know.

"Connie?" Armin shuts his book, looking across the barracks at the other boy.
"Hm?," Connie hums in response. Today the boys were enjoying a very well deserved and very rare day off from training. Shadis got called to set up graduation preparations in Trost.
He nods to the two unopened letters Connie has laying at the foot of his bed. "I don't mean to pry… but I've never seen you open your mail before." He cocks his head to the side, "Are you not in good terms with your family?"
Connie stiffens as a blush creeps up the back of his neck. "Uh," he coughs awkwardly to clear his throat. "I…" He knows that Armin would be the last one to ever make fun of him but it's still embarrassing to admit out loud. He sighs, shoulders slumping forward. "I don't know how to read…"
"Reading wasn't something that was viewed as important in Ragako…" He shrugs, rubbing the back of his neck, "My mom and oldest sister are the only ones in the family who can." That awkward feeling is back, he was a little ashamed. He aspired to be in the Military Police to make his family, his village proud but he couldn't do something as simple as read or write his family a letter in return.
Before he realizes, Armin joins him on his bunk, letters in hand. "Here," he gives Connie a small smile. "I'll read them too you and help you write a response. I'm sure they'd love to hear about your graduation."
Connie's face lights up, "Sure. Sounds great."
"Welcome home."
Connie digs his nails into the palms of his hands, "M-Mom?" Somewhere in the back of his mind, Connie wonders if his letter reached home at all. Was his family proud of him in the end?
