disclaimer: I don't own Phantom Stallion, if I did Sam and Jake would have gotten together way faster.

A/N: YAY! I finished this before Halloween, (I actually started it around Valentine's, which explains the fluff.)

What with living so far away from each other, out on the range, it was impossible to trick-or-treat on Halloween. So every Halloween, Darton Grade School held a Halloween party for all the area school children. It was of course a costume party.

Jake (being Jake) of course decided that if he had to go he'd be dressed as a cowboy. At eight years old he thought he was much to old to be doing such a silly thing as dressing up, (blech, girly stuff).

Sam (being Sam) and only six, couldn't decide between going as a cowgirl or a princess. So of course she went as both. She wore a pretty sequined pink dress, with a cowgirl hat and boots.

Jake personally thought she looked stupid. So of course he told her so. She punched him. He had a black eye at the party. He told Quinn he ran into a door. Quinn didn't believe him and high-fived Sam. The traitor.

So they went, Maxine and Gram took pictures, Jake rolled his eyes, and Sam was happy. Jake tried to pretend he didn't care.

Maxine Ely, being the romantic sort, forced Jake to take Sam to the Halloween Masked Dance.

Jake (being Jake) knew that he was being set up, so he did everything he could think of to get out of it. (From pretending to be sick to having broken his leg again).

Gram, also the romantic sort, had teamed up with Brynna, who was less of a romantic, but still thought the idea was sweet and romantic and all that mushy stuff. They forced Sam to accept Jake's (forced) invitation.

Sam (being Sam) knew that she was being set up, she couldn't care less. (Because really, why go to a silly dance when she could be helping Shadow, their new (and very pregnant mare) give birth.

So Halloween came, and at 7:30, Jake drove to Riverbend to pick Sam up. He even got out of the truck to open the door for Sam (but he'll deny it until he's dead).

Jake (who really didn't care, but had no say in the matter) had been forced into a tux. He was going to kill someone before the night was up he just knew it.

Sam (who also didn't care, but at least picked out her dress herself) wore a pretty green dress that complimented her curled red hair.

So they went, they danced (Sam forced Jake to dance), and they went home early because Sam couldn't bare leaving Shadow for any longer.

Later that night, as Sam knelt in the hay (not caring that her dress was getting dirty, drying off Shadow's newborn filly, Jake knew, she truly was a Cowgirl Princess.
