For gokudera, Tsuna's death took a lot out of him. At first, Tsuna was known as his boss and he would call himself his future right-hand man. But as Gokudera continued following tsuna, he was so close to Tsuna that he could call himself his friend. Of course, it would be too much of a honour.
But not close enough to know his plans.
On the day before his death, he should have known something was wrong. His boss went to his side and hugged him. That was 'normal' since it was Tsuna, but his eyes were filled with regret and sorrow. And he didn't even notice it. he could still remember what Tsuna said to him that very day. "What would you do if I died tomorrow?"
"W-why did you say t-that, Jyuudaime?" He spit out his half drinken coffee.
"Would you be sad?" Tsuna asks, completely ignoring Gokudera's incoherent mumbles. That made Gokudera surprised. " Of course I would! And why did you ask?" At that question, Tsuna turned away almost simultaneously, smiling a weak smile,"nothing, good night."
Yet, he could not notice anything.
Tsuna was his boss, partner and most of all, his best friend.
if it wasn't for him, he would have already been dead ten years ago. He taught Yamamota the meaning of life, what is precious and why he shouldn't waste it.
Yet, he wasted his own.
The irony.
he wished he could have spent more time. Wished he knew what was he going to do, so he could stop him. He lost his father already, he didn't need to lose his best friend.
The day before he died, he went to confront him about his father, he snapped at him. He didn't let Tsuna talk. Just push him aside. He remembered what Tsuna said quietly,
"Running away from life is weak, Yamamoto-kun,"

The two could not survive without Tsuna, after all the sky holds them all together.
