When We Met
Rose was lost. She could have sworn the staircase in front of her wasn't there last time, and her ankle still hurt from when she had fallen through a step. They had all warned her about the moving staircases and the trick stairs but this castle was just so huge.
She would have asked someone, except there was no one to ask. Everyone was in lessons and that was her worse fear – being late. When she had told her dad this fear, and the one about getting the lowest marks in class, he had told her she had her mother's DNA and, luckily for her, being late and being stupid were not in her genetic makeup. However, here she was, alone, with her lesson probably starting and a detention looming over the horizon. A detention. She would just die if she got a detention.
"Hello, are you lost?" said a rather snobby voice from behind her. Rose turned around. The snobby voice belonged to a white-haired, thin-faced boy in her year. She knew his name; of course, she had heard enough a stories about his father. Scorpius Malfoy. Although, unlike his father, she thought as she looked more closely at him, his face was softer, his eyes less cold, and they were a lovely shade of blue. Stop it, she thought, remember who he is. He did look a bit arrogant though. "I said, are you lost?"
"Yes, what's it to you?" she said
"Nothing, I was just being polite."
Rose blushed. "Sorry, it's just…it's a bit embarrassing to be lost, isn't it? " Scorpius shrugged. "What lesson are you supposed to be in?"
"Defence Against the Dark Arts."
"Me too. Shall we…shall we go together?" He smiled tentatively and, at that moment, all his arrogance disappeared. Rose's heart thumped against her chest. "Yes, thank you." She fell into step with him.
"What's your name?" said Scorpius.
"Rose Weasley."
"Oh, you're the daughter of Hermione and Ronald Weasley."
"Yes, why?" said Rose, a little sharply.
"Well, they're famous, aren't they? There are heaps of books written about them. So, you must know Harry Potter then."
"He's my uncle. My two cousins, Albus and James, they go to Hogwarts, too."
"I know, Albus Potter is in our year. He hasn't got a scar though."
Rose laughed. "It's not inherited, silly, haven't you read any of the books?" Scorpius mumbled something. "Pardon?" said Rose. "My dad won't let me read them, though I would love too," he said.
"Why does he not let you?"
"Because I think he feels ashamed. You can keep a secret, can't you?" Rose nodded. "My dad was a Death Eater, one of Voldemort's followers." whispered Scorpius.
"I know," said Rose, "and my dad saved your dad's life. Twice. If it weren't for him, you would never be born."
"My dad hates your dad," said Scorpius.
"My dad hates your dad, too," said Rose. Both children burst out laughing. They had reached the Defence Against the Dark Arts classroom. Scorpius but his hand on the door, but didn't push it open. He turned to face Rose. "Rose?"
"Yes?"
"Erm…would you…would you like to meet me by lake after…after dinner? We could have a walk." He blushed.
Rose hesitated, but then: "I would love to." Scorpius smiled, and then pushed open the door.
