"Did – did he rape me?" whispers Casey in terror, clearly on the verge of tears.
It's breaking Olivia's heart to see her friend like this. Her face is swollen and bruised and she looks – pitiful. There's simply no other word for it.
She clasps Casey's hands and says softly, "No."
Casey's panic is elevating. "Why can't I remember?" she cries in desperation and Olivia sees the fear etched into her features.
"You don't have to," Olivia tries to reassure her. "We're gonna find this guy."
Casey leans her head back against the pillows and closes her eyes. "Why did he attack me?"
Her words tug on Olivia's heartstrings and she opens her mouth to say something, but she can't think of what. What words could possibly reassure Casey now? Instead, she settles for the truth, the truth that she has to tell every victim they deal with. "I don't know, Case. But we're going to get him."
Casey gives her a wan smile. "That's what you always say."
Olivia can hardly argue that; she knows it's true. "But this time," she says. "I mean it. No one attacks my best friend and gets away with it."
