A Mother's Favorite Son
"Sirius! Wait for me! Sirius! I can't keep up!"
"Come on Mummy's boy! Let's go. I'm not waiting all day for you!" Thirteen year old Sirius Black yelled. He leaned against the tree, and waited for his younger brother to catch up to him. "I can't believe it." he said disgusted. "A Hogwarts student and you still run like a girl." he laughed nastily. "But then, how am I to know for sure that you aren't a girl?"
Regulous fought to keep back his tears. "Why are you so mean? Your friends aren't here. There are no girls to impress. Can't you just for once be nice to me?"
"Nope, it would take too much effort on my part. I am the way I am. Get used to it." then he took off running toward the house.
Regulous sighed deeply and slowly walked back toward home, kicking at stones as he went. "Git." he muttered. "Stupid, mean, git."
He opened the front door to the house and was greeted by his mother shouting. "Disgusting, traitorous bitch! Get out of my house!"
"Please, Aunt." a woman's voice said. "There's no need for you to act this way."
"There is every reason! It's bad enough you married a Muggle, but then to have a half-breed child! Disgusting! Get out, and take your brat with you!"
"Fine," the young woman shouted angrily. "I'm going!" she stormed past Regulous, nearly knocking him over; Sirius at her heels. "Annie, wait!" he caught her free arm. "I haven't seen you for so long... can't I at least get a look at her?"
Their cousin, the former Andromeda Black sighed, and held a small child in Sirius' direction. "She's adorable... what's her name?"
"Nymphadora. Nymphadora Tonks."
Sirius snorted. "Nymphadora? What kind of name is that?"
"A lovely one. Now give her back. I need to get home, or Ted will be worried. I you see Cissa or Bella, tell them I said 'hullo' and give them these." she held out two envelopes.
"Sure thing." Sirius replied. "Hey, Reg, come see her." Regulous backed away. He didn't like babies. His mother always said they were nothing but trouble. "No thanks." he said. "I'd rather not."
"Quite alright. Not everyone is used to babies." Andromeda said, taking her wriggling daughter from Sirius, who was snickering. "Reg needs to get used to babies. He's gonna have a whole bunch some day, aren't you Regulina?"
"Sirius, don't tease him..." but Regulous was already in the house. He ran up the stairs, past the house elves heads, and into his own room. He threw himself down on his bed and cried.
A moment later, his mother was beside him. "Enough." she said coldly. "Crying is a weakness, Regulous. I won't have a weakling for a son. There, there..." her face softened, "Some day my son, you will be great. We are an ancient and noble house. Your time will come." With a soft pop, she was gone.
Regulous sighed, and stared out the window, praying that, 'that day' would be tomorrow.
