It was an early summer morning when Monk woke up to hear his wife coughing.
"Trudy," he whispered, "you okay?"
"I" (cough) "I'll be fine. It's (cough) probably just a cold"
She looked terrible. Her face was all flushed her eyes watery and her voice made it clear she wasn't feeling well. She looked like every muscle in her body ached.
"I know you'll be fine," he said, "but I'm staying with you today. I'm not about to take any chances"
"Honey it's (cough) okay. I'll be fine"
"I know you will," he said, "but you're also five months pregnant and I'm not talking any chances"
She smiled at that. She loved being pregnant, knowing that there was a life growing inside of her and she loved what it meant. Being pregnant held so many perks.
He kissed her forehead.
"I'll be right back," he told her, "I'm just going to call and let Leland know I can't come in today"
"When you come back if you could bring in some of that chicken noodle soup that would be great," she said in between fits of coughing.
"Of course"
He rubbed her shoulders for a minute then when she started to drift to sleep he went into the other room"
"Hello," Leland asked as the phone rang.
"It's me," Monk said, "Trudy's sick so I won't be able to come in today. I'm sorry but in her condition-"
"Don't be sorry for loving her," the captain replied, "you'd better love her"
"How are the boys," he asked changing the subject
"Well Jarrod is incredible. He's really helping to get Max through it. Max, he's the sweetest little kid. But he doesn't understand the finality of Karen's passing. Just the other day he asked me if we could take an airplane up to heaven to visit mommy"
"Leland I'm so sorry"
"Don't," Leland said, "don't apologize. You did nothing to apologize for"
"I just feel responsible for the whole thing"
"Why," he asked, "the only one who is responsible for the bomb is the people who were behind it"
Monk muttered in agreement
"Give her a hug and a kiss for me," he said, "tell her I hope she feels better soon"
"I will"
They said their goodbyes and hung up. Adrian went to make the soup for Trudy.
When he came into the room she was still asleep.
Probably the best thing for her, he thought. She had been through a lot lately.
Whatever she was dreaming about clearly turned into a nightmare. She kept kicking and screaming in her sleep and she kept saying,
"Could those things hurt the baby? Could those things hurt the baby?"
"Trudy it's okay angel," he told her, "You were just having a bad dream"
She was breathing hard looking like she was about to pass out.
"It's okay," he told her, "Nothing bad happened. It was just a bad dream"
"It seemed so real though," she told him
He nodded in understanding
"Dreams can seem very real and very scary but they can't control you. They are only dreams"
"Oh GOD it was scary"
"I know it was," he said and handed her the chicken noodle soup. He held it up for her while she ate it.
"Thank you," she said, "I (cough) feel better (cough) now
"You don't sound better"
"Not physically," she acknowledged, "I'm still achy and I feel like yick but mentally and emotionally I'm feeling a whole lot better"
"I know this is going to get better soon," he told her, "sometimes it's just important to take a step backwards"
"And forwards," she added
"You know change isn't easy for me," he pointed out
"I really don't think it's easy for anyone," she admitted, "but really there is no change"
"Yeah," he said, "there is"
She looked at him with the eyes he could never resist.
"Ugh," he said, "even when you're sick you're irresistible"
"Tell me something I don't know," she joked
She woke up the next day feeling 100% better
