Grown-ups

When she was seven Lily thought that all grown-ups were tall, bossy and in charge.

When she was eight she thought that grown-ups were 35 (that's how old it said on her mummy's birthday card).

When she was nine she thought that grown-ups knew the answers to everything.

When she was ten she thought that grown-ups had real, proper jobs and happy marriages.

When she was eleven she thought that no-one was more grown-up than her, as she boarded the Hogwarts express for the first time.

When she was twelve she thought that she'd be grown-up when she was seventeen.

When she was thirteen she thought that being grown-up would be the best thing in the world.

When she was fourteen she thought that she was infinitely more grown-up than the silly, superficial little third years she'd been before.

When she was fifteen she thought that grown-ups could do whatever they wanted.

When she was sixteen she thought that she was ready to be a grown-up.

When she was seventeen she realised that grown-ups had problems too.

When she was eighteen and she found herself walking down the aisle she realised that maybe she wasn't quite as grown-up as she liked to think (after all she felt a little bit like a little girl playing dressing up).

When she was nineteen and she watched Dorcas Meadow's die she realised that being a grown-up meant taking load of risks and having no-one to answer to but yourself.

When she was twenty and about to have a baby of her own, she realised that she'd have to grow-up whether she wanted to or not.

When she was twenty-one and in hiding from the man who wanted to kill her son, she realised that being a grown-up wasn't all it was cracked up to be and maybe she'd just like to go back to being a little kid again.

Lily never made it to twenty- two.
