The cold water splashes the ground and hits her face. It's wet. It's cold. It doesn't bother her. Why should it? Everything in her life is crashing down and she doesn't even know why.
That's a lie. She knows why.
And she knows it's her fault. And she is the one who needs to fix things. She has to fix things.
Just the other week, during the zombie case, she tried so hard to fix things. So hard. And it worked, a little. And then this case came. Just like it always does when her mom is involved in a case, everything fell apart. And she had gone from being so close to sitting alone on a swingset in the middle of a freaking thunderstorm.
And she doesn't know what to do.
Except she does.
Because in that moment, something inside her changes. She can physically feel it. The crumbling, the rumbling. Her wall. She can physically feel it coming down.
Maybe that's what gets her to stand up, finally, or maybe something else. But she does. She stands up and starts walking. And she knows where to go. She's always known where to go.
She knocks four times before she can convince herself not to. She breathes in and out for a minute, calming her nerves, before the door opens and those breathes are proven useless. For just the sight of him right now is enough to make her heart beat faster and stop.
"Beckett, what do you want?"
Beckett. It hurts. But the hurt is masked by the joy inside her.
Because suddenly, it is broken. Gone. But it isn't. No, it's more like it had never even been there in the first place. It is non-existent.
Her wall. It's gone.
"You," she says and she leans in to kiss him like she's been wanting to for - well, forever, it seems.
It's blissful. But it doesn't last. He pulls her away and asks her what happened. She doesn't lie. She tells the truth. She tells him that she just wants him.
Her back is pushed against the door, slamming it shut. His mouth on hers moving in perfect rhythm. Again, it's blissful. But it does last, this time is does last.
Her wall is gone. It's broken down. All that remains are a few scattered bricks and a sun on the other side. It's like it was never even there. And finally, after all this time, after all the pain, and suffering, and hiding, and lying. Finally, she's free. Free to do the only thing she wants to do. Free.
