Miko: This is set sometime in the original series, but there aren't really any mentions of it. Kind of my thoughts on how Sayu views Light during the time he had the Death Note. Found it while I was looking through my documents and decided to post it. I can't believe I hadn't already.

Disclaimer: I own nothing.

Oniisan

Sayu peered over at her brother every time she was certain he was too absorbed in the problem to notice her glance. She knew he was beautiful. All her friends told her so frequently, as if she couldn't see it for herself. His hair was soft and feathered into his eyes, especially when he was bending over a book. His clothes fit perfectly, but not tight enough to show muscles, which Sayu knew he had from the times she had seen him walking to his room from the shower. His lip twitched and Sayu tore her eyes away from her brother and back on the math problem. Light was very hard to read, but Sayu knew all of it; she could interpret every twitch and change of inflection.

"This problem is quite simple, Sayu." Light said. Sayu blushed and looked away. Some may have interpreted it as embarrassment at being insulted by her brother, but her embarrassment was that Light saw through her so easily. She never really needed his help, and even though she suspected he knew that, he had never said anything before.

"I miss spending time with you, oniisan." She whispered, looking at him hesitantly. He frowned and Sayu bit back tears. Light only frowned when he was frustrated at someone. He had only ever smiled at Sayu, even when she was at her worst. She had considered herself the only person he cared about.

"I'm very busy, Sayu." He said. "I don't have time to babysit you every time you get the whim to see me." He rose and pushed his chair back. Sayu paid attention to his hands, which clenched the arms of the chair as he pushed it back. When he was in a good mood, his hands were relaxed.

"I know, oniisan." She said. "But…you used to make time for me. Now it seems like…Like you don't love me anymore. It's like you're a different person." Light had his back to her but she saw him freeze in the doorway. Neither of them moved for several minutes, but finally Light chuckled lightly.

"I'm sorry, Sayu-chan." Light said, turning to look at her. A few tears had pooled in her eyes and ran down her face before she could wipe them away. "I've been under a lot of stress, recently. Forgive me?" And when Light turned on his most charming face, Sayu knew he was just lying to please her, but it was enough for now. She stood and ran to her brothers arms, burying her head in his chest as he wrapped his arms around her.

"Thank you, oniisan." She said, though she didn't know why she was thanking him at all because she knew his lie. For once, she wished she didn't know enough about Light to see his faking, but she would never trade him for another brother, even if he did not love her. Because he was her oniisan, her brother, her Light.
