Slight AU/OC.

Steve McGarrett smiled slightly, watching his team laugh as they walked away from their office building. The three of them still feeling smug about being able to trick him into eating the slce of cake with salt on it. He had to give them that much, they did surpirse him.

He took one look at his sister; she gave him a small smile in return, before going to say something, but hearing his phone ring from inside his office.

"I'll be right back," he told her, quickly slipping through the office door, running his tounge along his teeth to try and get rid of the salty taste that had been from the cake.
"McGarrett," he answered, holding the phone to his ear, and keeping his eyes on his sister through the glass windows.
"Hi."

He didn't tense. He didn't feel surprised. He knew that he should have, but he didn't think he could. To him, it felt slightly natural to hear Lori Weston's voice over the phone, even after she had left nearly four months ago.

"Hey Lori," the Navy SEAL said cautiously.
"Uh, how are you?" she asked.
"Good, good, you?"
"Alright, could've been better, uh," he heard her hesitate, "how is everybody else?"
"They're good, none of them have died on me yet, so yeah," he chuckled.
She laughed slightly, "not yet."

Steve tapped a finger against his leg, trying to drown the awkward silence with his own thoughts. He failed.

"Happy Birthday," she said finally, "it's the reason I called."
"Thanks," he replied, leaning against the side of his desk.
"I would've gotten you something and sent it over, but my boss is pised off with me enough, and breaking cover probably wasn't a good idea," Lori laughed.
"Where are you?" he asked.
"Denver," she answered, "we've been working a case from the inside, lead came through and here I am, calling everyone I know from a pay phone."

He gave her a small chuckled, knowing that Lori Weston had a regular schedule to call family every week, and that going under cover would not allow such a thing.

"We miss you," Steve said, and he knew just how unlike him it sounded to say it.
"I miss you all as well," she replied, "I have to go."
"Don't get killed," he requested.
"I'll try not to."
"Goodbye Lori," he sighed.
"Bye Steve," Lori answered, "Hau`oli Lā Hānau."

He rubbed his forehead with his hand slightly, the phone going silent after she hung up. Steve McGarrett had to admit to himself, even though Lori Westo had only been with them for a few months, it felt different without her there.

He had to say that he missed her.

So.

This would be my first Hawaii 5-0 fanfic!

I just thought, what if Lori called Steve on his birthday, and how awkward would it be?

I'm thiking about a multi chapter fic to do with Lori's work crossing over with the 5-0 task force, but yeah.

My 'n' key is sticking, right? So I typed this entire thing, the I had to go back through ad place 'n's where they had been missed because I did'nt press the key hard eough. Gaaah.

Thakyou!

All mistakes are mine.
