AU: What if it wasn't Peeta who was in love with Katniss? What if Katniss was in love with him from the very start?
"I love you Katniss, I always have can't you see?" Peeta whispers softly to me while gently caressing my cheek.
"I-I thought it was only me, you always seemed more interested in the other girls. You never paid attention to me until now," I whisper back. I can feel the tears welling in my eyes but push the urge away.
"I guess you weren't paying close enough attention," he laughs.
I laugh a little and see him inching closer to my lips. I close my eyes and wait for the moment our lips will finally touch.
*BANG*
I awake with a loud thud. It was me falling off my bed. Sighing, I pick myself up off the ground and get ready for hunting with Gale. It's the same dream every night, me dreaming about Peeta. Like my dream would ever come true, besides Peeta never notices me. And I have more important things to think of. After all it's the reaping.
This year my very own sister will be put into the reaping bowl, but her odds are far greater than mine. I'd like to keep it that way for as long as I can.
I make my way through the forest and grab my trusty bow and arrow. On my way to mine and Gales usual hunting spot, I shoot a few birds and rabbits. It will be a good dinner tonight, that's for sure. But I can't stop thinking about Peeta, for all these years I still can't get his smile out of my head. It's like he is imprinted in my brain, my memories and my dreams.
"Hey Catnip," Gale says waking towards me.
"Hey," I give him a warm smile and pat the spot beside me for him to sit.
As he sits down he passes me a bun, "Courtesy of the baker," He says and takes a bit out of his own bun.
Gale doesn't know about my crush on Peeta, if he did he would only bug me. Plus he never asked.
I take a small bite out of my roll, mumbling a quiet "thank you,"
He stops eating and turns to me, "Katniss what's wrong? And don't give me the old 'I'm fine excuse.' I know when something's up," he says generally looking concerned.
I can't let him know I was thinking about Peeta so I say something else, "How many times is your name in today?"
"42," he exhales. Was he holding his breath? "I guess the odds aren't exactly in my favor." he laughs.
I am worried for my friend but what about Peeta? What if he gets chosen? I push the thought away and continue to finish my bun.
We do a bit more hunting and then head back to our District. Where we will be forced to face the reaping.
