Round and Round

A Princess Tutu fanfic by Klondike Aura

Rue knew Duck was strong.

She always knew Duck was strong somehow. But the strength always seemed to be in her sunny disposition and well of determination. Otherwise, she seemed...frail. When they danced, Rue was almost afraid she would snap the poor girl in two despite knowing what she was doing.

But that tiny body hid a strength she never would have known if Duck hadn't been holding her hand and arm tighter than she'd ever felt anyone hold her before.

"The ride hasn't even started yet," Rue says, putting her hand on top of the one clutching her arm.

"I've never been so high up like this before," Duck meekly ekes out.

"You'll like the ferris wheel. You chose this ride, after all."

"I know, but..."

"It won't be so bad once it's going."

Duck just hid her face in Rue's shoulder. Rue smiled unseen. Her friend really was ridiculous. Their entire time at the festival had been marked by unbridled enthusiasm before. Every new game and vendor was met with joyous abandon by the duck-turned-girl. Nothing could put a damper on their visit. Until they actually got on the big, beautiful ferris wheel that would show the entire festival at their feet. Before, Duck had pulled Rue in line, eager to see everything from the sky.

But there was an undeniable squeak from the redhead when they suddenly lurched backward and began their journey upward. They climbed slowly into the air until they made it to the top, at which point Rue let out a little gasp from the view.

"Duck, look..."

Duck managed to pull her head away from her friend's shoulder and Rue could see her face lighting up from the corner of her eye. Below, the city lights began flickering on in preparation for dusk, as if the blanket of stars reserved for the heavens was unfolding underneath and they were watching from the lofty clouds. By some happy coincidence, someone had released a bundle of balloons that sailed up towards the pair of girls. No longer fearful of the breathtaking height, Duck reached out to try grasping a balloon's ribbon. Rue laughed as it just slips past her fingers.

As if that was the cue, the ferris wheel began taking them around, both girls laughing now and holding tight for a different reason.

"What should we do next, Rue?" Duck asked as they both tried to find their feet once leaving the ride.

Rue didn't have to answer, as Duck found another booth they've yet to see and didn't hesitate to tug their still-joined hands towards their new destination.

Author's Notes: This is just a quick giftie I wanted to write for Manda-chan. I asked Sis for a prompt and she said, "Ferris wheel." This can be whatever you'd like it to be. During series, post-series, friendship fluff, girls-love fluff, I'm easy. XD
