They had been children once. As children, they had been so carefree, so happy . . . so innocent. Life had been blissfully uncomplicated.
Fire had changed everything for them, destroying the sweet innocence he and his brother possessed. Guilt and lament now gripped him, and he knew it.
What he would not give to go back to those carefree days, to have that sweet innocence back. More importantly, his brother could be a child again and not have to worry about anything except for maybe catching frogs and splashing in mud puddles.
But he knew. Just like his brother knew.
There was no going back. Their sweet innocence could never be returned.
