A Brief Moment of Peace

For inkystars

He sees her sitting there, a cup of coffee clasped in her gloved fingers. She's frowning down at her feet.

He knows who she is. It's impossible not to.

She's Rachel Berry.

Even if he hadn't seen her at Sectionals and Regionals, he would still know who she is.

Kurt talks about her a lot, even if he doesn't realise it.

She's still sitting there staring at her feet when he walks by nearly an hour later. He watches her for several minutes, weighing his options.

See if she's okay? Leave her to her life?

But in the end, he can't leave a girl alone when she looks so sad.

"Hey. Are you okay?"

She lifts her head in surprise.

"Of-of course. I'm perfectly fine." She lowers her eyes back to her feet after she speaks.

"You're Rachel, right? I'm Wes."

Her head lifts up again in surprise.

"Wes? You're from Dalton. One of Kurt's friends, right?" He smiles

"Yes. Are you okay, Rachel?"

She gets a funny look on her face, taking several minutes to answer.

But she doesn't look away and instead keeps her eyes on his.

"Not really."

He thinks for a minute, before sitting down next to her.

"Want to talk about it?"

He's not trying to impress her, just trying to help.

She smiles, just a little.

"I appreciate it. I don't think you want to listen to my problems, but thank you."

"It will get better, Rachel. It's getting better for Kurt, isn't it? He's returning to McKinley."

"He is?"

The utterly happy surprise on her face makes him smile.

He stands up.

"Take this."

He takes the small pin off his jacket, and pins it to her sweater.

"It's my good luck charm. You look like you could use a little luck. If you ever want to talk, Kurt has my number."

He smiles at her, before walking away.

He does not see her wide smile in response, or the way she looks down at the little gavel pin.

But he knows she does it.

And he's okay with that.
