Inspired by "Call Me Maybe"
...
He didn't know what had transpired inside him to actually give her his number. Curtis was pretty sure he was going to get caught dressed up as Christoph or, even worse, get attacked by an extremely curious co-worker by the name of Yancy. How such a timid-looking girl could be such a ferocious beast when it came to digging around into other's personal business was beyond him.
Even now, as he dug his face into his hands, he was recalling that horrible scene. Of all things he could have expressed while giving her his number, he said, "So…call me, maybe?" Where the heck did you pull that one from, Curtis? A low-grade sitcom designed for hormonal teenage girls with boy problems?
At least she laughed, and it was a nice laugh: dulcet and light. Even so, why couldn't he pull some snazzy one-liner out from a recently memorized script? Why couldn't he have just been all cool and casual, acting off a nonchalant, "Talk to you later?" with ease? Why, at that exact point, did he have to be one-hundred percent Curtis and pull off some dorky move like that?
He could hear Yancy catching wind of that and laughing at how inept he was with girls. Then again, Yancy always poked at Curtis being horribly awkward in any situation involving the other gender. While Christoph was an immediate "chick-magnet," Curtis was—what was the word? Oh yeah…derp. And maybe add a herp in front of that derp while you're at it, too, for the maximum effect.
Hearing the jingle of his Xtransceiver, he nearly shot out of his seat. Panic washed over him when he realized that the number was hers. A few deep breaths later, he answered to see her smiling face greeting him.
"And all the other boys try to chase me, but here's my number," she sang. "So…call me, maybe?"
He didn't know what he found so endearing about this first face-to-face call. Was it the fact that she actually called? What about the fact that even on that tiny little screen, she was still as pretty as ever? (He had no evidence to actually prove this since he had only seen her once, but it didn't matter. She was certainly beautiful to him.) Or maybe it was her nightingale-voice that turned his little faux pas into something meaningful and memorable?
"Not maybe, definitely," he told her, uttering the truth from the bottom of his heart.
And a smile bloomed on her face.
