Disclaimer: I don't own Bleach, or any of the Bleach characters used in this fic. They all belong to Tite Kubo: the genius behind the captivating manga that started it all. I only own any of my original characters that I choose to include, as well as any of my own original plot ideas.

Insecure

Prompt: Golden eyes...

A/N: Written for an LJ challenge, 5_prompts... And out of boredom. Takes place during Bleach: Fade to Black (I Call Your Name).

There had always been a fire burning within those eyes of his. That much had been determined from the beginning of his captaincy. Yet, despite the warmth that one would expect from such a bursting flame, it was quite the opposite. It would burn, hot enough to melt flesh from bone, yet with ice cold enough to spread fear through one's veins once contact had been made. It was insanity, not peace, that emanated from within those eyes. Something so "trite" as peace would never have a place within them.

All that lived within was madness.

And now, having been driven to the edge, his madness had spread throughout the ranks, striking fear and nightmares into hearts and minds alike. Even her own lieutenant seemed to have contracted this fear that made itself known through the tremors that struck her at random. Surprisingly, even she, Captain of the Fourth Division, had been plagued with horrid images in the dead of night. As if her work wasn't hard enough with the failing treatments administered to her patient.

Despite her methods, everything had fallen apart. Questions regarding the intruder into the Soul Society, the woman he claimed to be searching for, and the mass chaos that had ensued within the Twelfth Division continued to pile higher, adding to the stress that was already present. The majority of said stress being due to her uncooperative, not to mention ill-tempered, patient.

As much as she would have liked for the issues to sort themselves out, thus yielding information that would bring an end to the confusion and amnesia, such a thing was but a pipe dream at the moment. It was nothing she'd ever voice to her subordinates, but such a lack of crucial knowledge was strangling her. Adding to this pressure were the constant hours of trying to discern the events within the Twelfth that taken quite the toll on both Retsu and her spacey patient. Something had truly gone amiss to have forced Mayuri Kurotsuchi into such silence. Questioning and medication did little to improve the captain's thought process.

Strangely enough, the continuous visits to his holding cell seemed to set her mind at ease, despite his horrid reputation and lack of progress.

Amidst all the chaos, the most frightening thing was the knowledge that the magnetic appeal was sincerely starting to take effect. She found herself irresistibly drawn to his dark character, wondering what could have twisted him into such a creature. The mystery alluring, having sunk its hooks into her subconscious mind, creating an atmosphere of insatiable curiosity and wonder. Nightmares plagued her, showing images of what she feared she would become.

Resistance, it seemed, would do nothing to save her. For there was always that lingering idea, just below the surface, that she was slowly falling into that dark abyss.

KuroHana. Yes, it's my favorite Bleach pairing.
