Over 4 million species of plants and animals are said to exist in the present. However, roughly 5 to 50 billion living species have existed since the orgin of the Earth. In other words, 99.9% of all living species cannot escape thier destined extinction. Earth's species have narrowly avoided total annihilation six times to date. But we still have no way of determening the key factors that lead to extinction.
