I just saw The Dark Knight, and it was the best movie ever
I just saw The Dark Knight, and it was the best movie ever. So, in honor of the film and Heath Ledger (God rest his soul) I present to you my little Dark Knight one-shot "Be a Clown". Enjoy! (I don't own anything Batman related)
"Be a Clown"
Everything is going according to plan, thought the man otherwise known as The Joker,
soon everyone in Gotham, including 'The Batman', will see that anyone, anyone on this
whole planet, will be willing to kill in order to save themselves. The notorious clown prince
was watching the two stalled boats floating peacefully on the bay. One of the boats
contained several prison inmates, the other, innocent civilians who didn't want any part
in The Joker's 'game'. Joker laughed to himself about the predicament on the boats. He
suddenly felt the urge to take a stroll on the near-deserted streets of Gotham. I don't
need to worry, he thought, those boats won't be going anywhere soon.
The Joker had been walking for about ten minutes before he realized he was in the
Gotham suburbs. The 'suburbs' including nothing but cheap apartment buildings with
dirty streets to match how they looked on the outside. He heard arguing coming from a
first-floor home. An eleven-year old kid came out and rested his arms on the railing on
the balcony-like stoop. "Sounds a bit screwy in there", said Joker, who was interested.
"You don't know the half of it", said the kid, not bothering to take a look at the man who
was conversing with him. Probably just some homeless dude with a bit of wisdom left in
him, he thought. "But I do, mostly because your 'wonderful' dad in there reminds me of
my father", Joker said, stepping into the dim porch light so that the kid could get a look
of who he was really talking to, "and I hated my father". The kid nearly fell over the
railing after looking at the deranged clown. "I-I've seen you on the news", said the kid
with a mixture of fear and shock, "you're the guy the police and Batman are after"! "Oh
no!" said the Joker in fake shock, "it looks like you got me, best call the police on me"!
The kid just stood there, unsure on what to do. "Maybe I should", he said. "Come on,
kid, are you?" Joker said, questioning his bravery. "No", the kid said in a kind of defeated
voice. "Kid, do you want to how to escape this miserable life of yours"? The kid nodded
excitedly. "Then here's my advice: Be a clown. The kid looked at Joker confused. "You
know", explained the Joker, "be like a clown, do what ever you want, learn some 'magic
tricks', the works". Joker then looked at the watch: it was 11:25. "Oh, will you look at
the time", he said, "I must be off". He started to walk away, but turned back.
"Remember what I said". He then walked down the street into darkness.
The next day, the Joker had been caught and sent to Arkham Asylum, the people on the
boats were safe, and The Batman was currently being hunted for killing several people
including DA Harvey Dent. The kid, who was still a little shocked about what had
happened, received a box in the mail. When he opened the box, all he found was a joker
playing card. It looked ordinary, but on the back of it was the message: REMEMBER, BE A
CLOWN.
