Goodbye
Carla knew she had to handle it sometime. She had to handle the fact that she would have no one to click her fingers with, to shake her head at or to just generally have a laugh with. Other than the people that loved her. But Laverne was one of those people. So how could she move on, when no
one else knew what she was going through?
Denial told her that the only reason her imagination conjered Laverne's spirit was because it was the only way that Carla could speak to her. It was the only way Carla knew she wouldn't be alone - even if she was surrounded by friends and loved ones.
But stepping into that hospital room and seeing Laverne on the bed made her wonder why she had to
stand there and cry. Why it was that Laverne was the one dying; and not someone who deserved to. Of course, no one did. But Laverne especially didn't deserve to. Who else would understand Carla?
"Go on girl," Laverne's spirit began, Carla took a deep breath a lump in her throat formed as Laverne's voice echoed through her. For one of the last times. "You can do it."
Carla continued to stare at Laverne's still, yet still breathing body. The gentle beeps of the monitors surrounded her and drew her in. She stepped forward and worried her lips with pearly white teeth, eyes filling with tears she didn't expect to shed.
Taking a deep breath Carla stared at Laverne's face, and began her farewell, "Wow, I'm still not ready to do this.." She laughed softly, "It's gonna be so weird not having you by my side everyday. Making fun of the doctors, going on and on about Jesus," A small laugh filled the room, but Laverne still didn't respond.
"Man, I hope he's real or you're gonna be pissed," Carla joked, "Remember my first day? When a patient came in and started bleeding out on me? I was so shocked I could barely move. But you stood by my side, and you guided me through it. And then you did the most amazing thing of all... you made me laugh." Carla didn't hold in the fact that her tears were becoming apparent. Slowly, they slipped down her cheeks and she let them out with gentle sobs and sniffs, but still continued.
For Laverne.
"For the last fifteen years, you've been my role model.. But most of all you've been my friends," A small sob escaped Carla as she begged inwardly that Laverne made her way through this, and just came back. For her. She took a deep, shaky breath and stared at the floor, letting her tears continue to fall.
Shaking her head, Carla looked back up and tried to bring a sense of strongness into her voice, "And I don't know what else to say, so... I'm really, really gonna miss you." The strong in her voice faded and her words came out shaky, slowly she leant down and pressed a sad kiss to Laverne's cold cheek.
"Goodbye." Turning around she noticed Laverne's spirit wasn't there anymore, and her heart hurt more than she really expected it to.
"Come here baby," Carla turned to face out of the door and walked towards Turk, who stood with Dr. Cox, J.D and Elliot. And even if he wasn't Laverne, she still trusted him to make her feel better. Because, she didn't want to say goodbye again.
