Takes place after Insurgent. Tris and Tobias are back at Divergent Headquarters.
Tris POV
3 years have passed since the war ended. It's great to be home again. Everyone has moved back to their factions. The factionless created a new faction that is beginning to transform the entire faction society. Tobias and I returned to our happy pre-war selves, well sort of. You cannot be a major part in the war and return to your old lives.
We share an apartment now. He asked me to move in with him the second the war ended. I glance at the clock on the wall. 7:06. Tobias said he would be back before 7 so we could go on a date. He has been acting really weird around me lately, Christina keeps telling me not to worry, but I can't not freak out every time he's home late, or ignores me for a few hours. I don't know how I would survive without him around, without him to love.
I hear the doorknob turn and I jump off the couch to greet him at the door. He pulls me into a tight hug and kisses my temple.
"Can't breathe," I pretend gasp, even though I hope he doesn't let go.
"Sorry babe. Ready to go?" He asks, releasing me from my hug, but grasping my right hand firmly in his. He leads us out to the grassy area that we only come to when someone has important news to share. O NO! What is it? My mind starts freaking out. I am thinking that my biggest worries are finally coming true. He is breaking up with me! I look up at his face. He looks just as lost in thought and as scared as I do. Why would he be scared he is the one dumping me!
He gives me a half-hearted smile and sits down on the blanket he has just laid out, pulling me into his lap. I take a deep breath, smelling his intoxicating smell. We sit this way as we eat the picnic that he has packed. His quietness is just making me more nervous.
After about a half-hour he slides me off his lap, gets up, and paces for a few feet, nervously wiping his hands on his black jeans. He finally comes back over to me and pulls me up so that we are standing face to face. I know what is coming next and let a single tear fall from my eye. He wipes the tear away looking confused, but he doesn't say anything about it, making me feel worse.
He shifts to grab something out of his jacket pocket, but keeps it in his face so that I don't see it. He closes his eyes for a second, as if to regain his thoughts before he slowly gets down onto one knee and opens a ring box. In the box I see the prettiest diamond ring ever. It is a large stone, two smaller stones and a pretty white gold band connecting them.
"Tris, I have loved you since the day I first say you when you came to Dauntless. You are my favorite person in the entire world, my best friend. Will you marry me?"
I am stunned, but luckily it only takes me a few seconds to regain my thoughts. "YES," I scream as I crash into him to give him a hug. "Is this why you have been so distant lately?"
He laughs. "Sorry about that. I was freaking out about how you would respond." He stands back up keeping me in his arms. As we slowly walk back into the building can't stop staring at the ring.
Christina runs up to us soon after we get inside, "Did you say yes?"
"Of course I did!" We squeal. I look up at Tobias, "She knew?"
"You're the only one who didn't know silly," Christina giggles
I just smile ready to begin my life, and to think less than an hour ago I was positive by the end of the day I would be single and alone. What a great day!
