Disclaimer: I don't own House or any of the characters, and I don't own the song lyrics.
A/N: Hey, this is my first House fic. It's House/Stacy, mostly because the whole thing just kinda fit in my mind. This songfic is assuming that they actually went further in the episode, instead of getting interrupted by the ducklings. The song is 'So Close', by Jon McLaughlin. Anyway, read and review, please!
He carefully burrowed further under the covers, trying not to disturb the woman fast asleep in his arms.
You're in my arms
And all the world is gone
He looked down at her face, so peaceful in sleep. Even those sharp eyebrows seemed somehow softer, more gentle. He moved a lock of hair behind her ear, his motions gentle and slow to avoid waking her.
He felt as peaceful as she looked. He knew this would create problems, especially if Mark found out, but he didn't think about that right now. He kept his mind on the beautiful woman sleeping next to him. He couldn't remember the last time he'd felt like this. So peaceful. He felt almost human. Almost…alive.
The music playing on for only two
So close together
And when I'm with you
So close to feeling alive
He'd thought they could never have what they had had before the operation. He'd thought that life was destroyed. That he would never have something like that ever again.
A life goes by
Romantic dreams must die
So I bid mine goodbye
But now…now he almost felt that life again, just at the edges of his grasp. He could almost feel it, as real as the woman in his arms.
She was what he'd been missing. All that time he had been so lonely and miserable, having hookers come to his place…all that time, it had been her he'd longed to hold.
And never knew
So close was waiting
Waiting here with you
And now, forever, I know
All that I want is to hold you
So close
He'd dreamed of this so often, but there had always been a different face, a different woman in his arms. He'd never thought that he could have her again, that they could be happy together again. He looked down at her again, afraid that she had vanished and he would be alone with his dreams again.
So close to reaching
That famous happy end
Almost believing
This one's not pretend
She was still there, still sleeping peacefully. He carefully tightened his arms, determined not to let her get away again. Not to chase her away again.
And now you're beside me
And look how far we've come
So far
We are
So close…
He didn't know what he would do if he lost her again. If she didn't want him back. If this had just been a one-time thing. If she still wanted Mark.
Oh, how could I face the faceless days
If I should lose you now?
But she couldn't. He knew they were having problems. He couldn't have gotten this far if she still wanted Mark, not him. She had to want him back, to have cheated on her husband, no matter what problems they were having.
He sighed and shifted, moving closer to her, carefully maneuvering his bad leg into a comfortable position. She was real. This wasn't a dream. He smiled slightly, running a finger down her bare shoulder lightly. She wasn't a dream this time.
We're so close to reaching
That famous happy end
Almost believing
This one's not pretend
As light as his touch was, it woke her. She blinked sleepily, looking up into his blue eyes. He held his breath, afraid the dream would burst now.
Let's go on dreaming
For we know we are
So close
She smiled up at him and snuggled closer, careful of his bad thigh. He relaxed. The dream was intact.
So close, and still
So far
For now.
