Booth raised his hand, waving at his departing son in the back of the SUV, determined to keep a smile on his face until the vehicle vanished. While a part of him was reassured by the fact that Parker insisted on seeing him this morning, he'd thought he'd said his goodbyes last night. Wounds had been reopened at the vision of his precious son running through the lab, yelling for one more hug and his presence as they drove off. A sight he hadn't wanted to see.

"You all right?" A question he'd asked her many times, but one he didn't like hearing from her lips. Certain she would go into an explanation of the distance being bridged by modern technology, or some other point irrelevant in his mind, he cut her off.

"Bones, just…don't say anything, okay?" His eyes stared into the distance and he blinked rapidly, forcing back the tears. Just before the pain in his chest became unbearable, as though his heart was literally breaking, he felt her slim fingers wrap around his clenched fist, sliding their way into his palm, and her head resting against his shoulder, which spoke volumes more than any words ever could.
