Bella Swan was not a normal girl.
Not that you could tell just by looking at her. She was a transfer student from out of state, but not particularly mysterious, and she was quite open about her past.
No one could tell that it was completely fabricated, not even the 'hidden' coven of vampires.
Oh, she knew about them. Honestly, she was sometimes surprised the normal students couldn't tell, since they didn't try particularly hard to blend in, and were even more obvious to someone with her senses and observational abilities.

A curious thing about vampires is that every now and again, one goes missing. It's commonly accepted that they simply were overstressed, and offed themselves, or simply moved without telling anyone. These explanations are true; sometimes.
Normal humans assume they are supreme among the creatures of Earth; the are incorrect. Likewise do vampires feel confident in their position; likewise are they wrong.
Among the sheep that are humans, walk wolves.
Among the wolves that are vampires, walk things Other.
Supremely adapted to seducing the wolves with an ovine façade, a veneer of vulnerability, they are killers of killers.

The telepathic male, Edward, was seated at her table, and he cast a shriveling glare at her before looking away. Bella cringed away from his glower, ostensibly cowed and confused.
But internally, the double vampire grinned.
