Author's notes: This came about in a rather strange way. I wanted SO BAD to write something for Dan/Jan day this month, but my muse has been rather stagnant lately. While I was talking with Misty in the chatroom, I suddenly got the idea to write a drabble fic where there's no talking, no kissing, no hugging... just this. I hope you enjoy. :)

The Icing Wars

He was doing it again.

Janet watched as Daniel's hand slowly inched towards the cake in the middle of the table. He was getting good at it, she didn't deny that. He looked so innocent, sitting there with his chin in his hand, pretending to read the book open in front of him. He thought she was focused on eating her soup, but her eyes hadn't left him for a moment. She didn't trust him as far as she could throw him.

Just as his hand got within an inch of the prize, Janet took her spoon and rapped him hard across the knuckles.

Daniel grunted and withdrew his hand, shooting her a glare as he cradled his sore knuckles against his neck.

Janet smirked and went back to eating.

He had been at this all day. At first he'd hovered over her as she'd baked the cake and made the icing, begging to be allowed to lick the spoon. Janet had refused, giving the honour to their six-year-old daughter. It was her birthday, after all. Daniel had been sulking ever since, like the big baby he was.

Sulking and trying to sneak a taste of the icing as the cake sat cooling on the kitchen table. Why he couldn't wait just a few more hours for their daughter's birthday party, Janet couldn't understand.

She hadn't even finished her soup before he tried it again. This time, Janet quickly reached out to grab his hand, but he pulled it away just in time. She gave him her strictest look, and received his puppy dog eyes in return.

Yeah, like that was going to work on her after seven years of marriage.

She had found over the years that the best tactic was to just ignore him. Eventually, he would give up and walk away to sulk somewhere else. A few hours after that, it would be as though nothing had happened. So, she returned to her lunch without a word, pretending once again to have taken her eyes off of him.

This tactic appeared to be working when Daniel sighed heavily and rose to his feet. He picked up his book and plodded out of the kitchen, looking as lost and unloved as an orphan on the streets.

Janet snorted and revelled in her victory. Now he would disappear into his office and bury himself in his work until the party began. She could live with that.

After finishing off the last of her soup, Janet got up and took her dishes over to the dishwasher. There were various dirty dishes and saucepans scattered over the counter from lunch, so she packed those into the machine, too. There wasn't quite enough in there yet to warrant turning it on, so she closed it up, wiped her hands, and went back over to the table.

She stopped dead in her tracks as soon as her eyes homed in on the delicious centrepiece. There was a deep slash in the icing across the top of her beautiful cake!

Janet's jaw dropped in horror. Her back had been turned for thirty seconds, and he had managed to sneak in and do this without her hearing him? Ohhhh, was he gonna get it.

She heard a door slam somewhere in the house, and she knew immediately it was him. He'd probably locked himself away in his office, but the joke was on him - she knew where the key was.

With purpose in her stride, Janet marched out of the kitchen. "DANIEL!"
