Waiting for Jack

The last time he came, he said he would visit. He said he would come back for me. I've waited all day for him to come, from the start of the sunrise to right now, the beginning of the sunset.

Jack always keeps his promises I thought to myself as I wondered where my brother was. He said that we could go to Santa Fe, and we will someday. I just know it! However, as the hours of the day ticked and tocked by, my brown-haired, daring brother never showed.

As the sunset, the room grew darker. The sun went down as the thought of my friend coming to save me was slowly disappearing.

Don't worry my thoughts told me, He'll be here. Jack might just have gotten caught up with something. Maybe he's helping the other fellas, and he'll be here by midnight!

My mind kept making up these scenarios of why Jack wasn't here. It kept telling me that he would be here soon to visit me; to tell me about the other boys. About how Race's smoking set off the fire alarm again, or how Albert took Spec's glasses and hid them, or he would tell me about Santa Fe.

Around midnight, I heard something, or possibly someone tapping at the bars that guarded the windows of my prison. Was it a friend, or a foe? Was it Jack, or was it just a pesky bug?

A cold sweat falls down my face as I move closer to the window.

"Hello? Is anyone there?" I call out in a nervous tone, my voice shaking. I slowly moved over to bars.

"Jack? Is it you?" I asked. No reply came. I moved to the window to see what tapped on the bars. It was nothing but a rat. A dirty, skinny rat.

I waited the rest of the night for Jack. I stayed up until sunrise hoping he would come. But no one came.

He didn't come I think to myself. I bet he doesn't even care that much about me anymore. One visit must have been enough for him.

The normal damp, cold feeling of the refuge left me as the sun began to dawn upon a new day, and I felt nothing as I curled up into a ball and slowly fell asleep.
