Haunting Me

If there is one thing that Sasuke will never forget, it is the haunting look in Naruto's eyes. The way that when Naruto's eyes would look up at him from where he had fallen, and nothing but the deep dark sorrows of the most remote corners of the soul. It would make Sasuke stumble over his next words, and make him feel inadequate. How could his sorrow compete with the overwhelming sorrow of one who has seen the absolute darkest side of humanity?

That haunting look stayed with Sasuke for a long time. Following him through the dark halls of Orochimaru's lair. Those blue eyes, stared up at him, with what he believed to be, at that time, the most frightening, condemning, and melancholy look that has ever been in existence. He was proven wrong the next time he saw Naruto though.

It was in the middle of a fierce battle. There was blood and gore lying about the fields and the damning eyes of the victims staring up lifelessly at the still standing soldiers. It was at this point when Sasuke turned blindly, slicing at the nearest victim and then jabbed blindly into the stomach of the next.

A whispered name made him look up. "Sasuke?" Sasuke looked up at the one who was sure to die now. Prepared to laugh in his victim's face, when he saw something he didn't expect.

Those eyes, those haunting eyes. Now covered with the film of fading life and light. Appearing almost gray like a mountain fog. Staring up at him, then there was a moment of absolute clarity where Sasuke could see his own face, twisted with rage, fading into disbelief and absolute sorrow. A stutter "N-Naruto?" A small blink, I saw the blood bubble over the sword, I pulled it out, and then the blood flowed freely. "I-I didn't know it was you."

"It's fine, it's okay." Naruto whispered. Sasuke looked at the wound, it was one that was impossible to heal, but took forever to kill.

"I'm sorry." Sasuke whispered.

"It's fine, I'd rather die by your hand than any other's."

"You couldn't, couldn't possibly." Blood came up through Naruto's throat, and bubbled from in between his lips. Unable to speak, he reached over and scribbled into the sand. 'I loved you.'

"I did too, I did too."

'I still' a pause as his hand shook. 'Do'

"I love you, I love you."

'Tell me a story.' Was quickly scribbled in the sand, anything, anything to help him escape the pain.

"Once upon a time, there was a boy…" Sasuke began. His story lasted for half an hour until he finally stopped. Glancing down at Naruto occasionally, his story stopped abruptly when he realized that Naruto wasn't breathing anymore. The way that Naruto looked up at him, his eyes all dull and void of life, that is the one thing that will haunt him forever. Still when he closes his eyes, he sees Naruto's eyes looking at him with absolute shock and fear. Then over that image, another image appears, one of completely dead eyes. Eyes with nothing in them, eyes that are so far gone that there was no bringing them back. Haunting him, haunting him, they will never leave him.
