Guess Again!
"The description matches Colonel Hogan!" Hochstetter snarled.
"That is impossible! Colonel Hogan has been right here!" Burkhalter countered.
"How would you know? You were in Berlin!" Hochstetter demanded.
Burkhalter sat listening to the accusations while watching the Senior POW, who, with his most innocent expression on his face, was standing mutely listening to the debate.
"I kept in touch by phone. No escapes were reported!" Burkhalter answered, crossing his arms and looking away from the red faced Gestapo Major.
"What do you have to say to this, Colonel Hogan?" Hochstetter now stood within inches of the American's face. Hogan, with his eyes open wide in apparent amazement at being suspected of espionage, looked back at Hochstetter and shrugged before opening his mouth to reply.
Burkhalter interrupted, before the American officer could answer, "I think you are grasping at straws, Major! The fact that Hogan is standing in front of you now should indicate he was nowhere near Paris. Why would he come back if he had escaped?"
Hochstetter shifted his gaze to the General before looking back at the prisoner.
Hogan tilted his head, in an I couldn't have said it better manner, and nodded.
"Besides, you know Hogan as well as I do. There's no way he could keep his mouth shut for that length of time!" Burkhalter added.
Burkhalter smiled while looking at Hochstetter. The Major stood speechless. He couldn't argue with that. He had tried many times to get the American Colonel to shut up.
"BAH!" Hochstetter exploded as he turned and stormed out of the room, followed by General Burkhalter.
Hogan walked over to Klink's desk, slipped a cigar out of the back of the cigar box, and lit it. Blowing out a stream of smoke, he turned, looked at the door, and smiled!
