"Tris?"

I look up. "Yes..."

It's just Tobias. He sits beside me. The train shrieks along the tracks, and late afternoon sunlight filters though the open door, making moving shadows which make a wonderful distraction for practically everything that's on your mind. In this case: a war against super-smarties who are controlling about half of the army we thought we had, the death of all the people in the place I grew up in, and the fact that there is now a really cute boy sitting next to me staring at me like there's something wrong. Which, of course, there is, but I'm not about to tell him that.

"Hello? Anybody in there?" I realize he has asked me something.

"What?" It comes out harsher than I mean it to and I blush. "Sorry."

"I asked if you were okay." His dark blue eyes are wide with worry and exasperation, a mix of emotion I had never seen before. "I asked you three times, Tris."

"Oh. I'm fine."

"Yes, Tris, you're fine, which is precisely why you are sitting alone in a empty train car crying."

"I'm not crying, Four."

He touches my cheek, grins, and shows me his fingers. They were wet. "Tell me what's wrong."

"We're outcasts. My parents are dead, my brother is siding with the enemy, I killed my best friend's boyfriend then had to tell her about it in front of everyone, my grandmother is apparently some sort of pre-apocalypse person-God, Tobias, we're all part of a post-apocalyptic experiment-" The words soured in my mouth-apocalypse. What had happened? "I-it-I'm just having an information overload."

"I guess you'd never be Erudite, then."

I look at him. "Why?"

"Those guys would be soaking it all up. I'm dead convinced that they've all got photographic memories." Tobias says, face serious.

"Caleb doesn't." I say, smiling. "When we were both in Abnegation, he forgot things all the time-you should have seen all the lists that boy made. And he had to hide every last one from our parents."

"Because making lists is for one's personal use, not for other people." Tobias had a faint smile stretching his lips.

"Yes! How did you..." I stop, remembering that once upon a year, Four had been a member of Abnegation. It made me feel guilty that I didn't remember him from my childhood in gray. Back then, I had only heard his name whispered in corners. Now, I know who he is. Tobias, Four. My boyfriend. I don't know if I could ever forget those dark blue eyes.

He smiles dryly. "Forget something?" His handed found mine. "Christina's been looking for you, you know."

"Apparently you were too."

"Well, you're my girlfriend. I can't exactly let you go missing."

"You could, but I can assure you that I wouldn't like it." I reply smoothly.

"Oh, I'd be fine."

"No you wouldn't, I would haunt your dreams."

Tobias squeezes my hand. "My dreams are all rainbows and happiness. And having Tris Prior in them would only make it better."

"Really?"

"Yes. Now, do you want to go back and let everyone stop worrying?"

"No."

He looks at me. "Why not."

"I don't wanna get up." I make a pouty face and try not to let my smile overpower it.

"But we have to get up at some point."

"But I don't wanna!"

Tobias laughs. "Tris, we're arguing like three-year olds."

"I'll go, Tobias, if you promise me something."

"Anything for you, Tris."

"Promise me we'll never grow up, neither of us."

Tobias smiles, his dark eyes glittering, hand on the metal connecting door between cars. The shadows flicker over his face. "Was that ever an option?"
