Glasses

Lucien didn't think much of it, at first. Sometimes when reading the newspaper, Jean would squint slightly or hold the paper a bit closer to her face. But it started happening more frequently. And she started misreading things. She even started complaining about labels on things she'd bought from the shops.

"Jean, the writing isn't getting smaller, I promise," he said, equal parts concerned and teasing.

She sighed, finally admitting defeat. "I know. Lucien, I think I need glasses."

He took her to get her eyes checked the next afternoon. They returned home, armed with Jean's new reading glasses. "Come now, lets see them," Lucien encouraged.

She put them on and had to admit she could finally see properly. She had chosen simple silver octagonal frames because she thought they were the subtlest thing she could find, but now she worried that she looked too much like an old lady. She grumbled when she put them on. But she looked at her husband and saw the strangest look on his face.

"What?" she asked with concern.

"I didn't think you could possibly be more beautiful. But...oh Jeanie, I do like those glasses," he growled.

She let a giggle escape her lips. "Do you really?"

"Mmm," he hummed, gathering her in his arms. He had to tilt his head a bit more than usual to avoid her new glasses, but they found the right fit and he kissed her deeply. "I do indeed. You're gorgeous. But perhaps you shouldn't wear them too often," he realized.

"Why not?"

"Because now everyone will know you're smarter than I am, and no one will ever bother having me be their doctor because they'll assume I'm the incompetent one in this relationship. Which is true, but people shouldn't know that," he joked.

Jean lovingly swatted at his chest. "Don't be silly."

"I'm not being silly. I'm pointing out a new problem," Lucien responded with feigned seriousness.

"Well, I only need them for reading. And I think they'll work out just fine if you kiss me like that every time I wear them. I'll have to take them off so they don't get squashed between our faces," she noted with a slight blush.

Lucien grinned widely and gently removed the glasses from her face so he could kiss her once again, as illustration of her statement.
