Author's Note: So, I recently came across a really interesting fan fic on this site called "Rockabye" by a site member who goes by the username of Lieutenant Myst, and it is a heartwarming collection of one-shots and I suggest y'all go check it out and read the stories for yourself.
So I decided that I will make my own AU story with a similar premise, only with a single continuous narrative rather than a collection of unrelated one-shot stories. Also, this story is loosely inspired by my own childhood growing up in the Appalachian Mountains of Virginia in the late 1990's and early 2000's.
Attack On Titan and the games Dungeons & Dragons and Boot Hill are property of Hajime Isayama and Wizards of the Coast respectively, I own nothing and make no money whatsoever.
Ackerman Household, Martin Holler Road
Trammel, Dickenson County, Virginia
October 2005
It was another Friday evening in mid-October for thirty-two year old Levi Ackerman and his wife Hange, along with their two kids, thirteen-year old Mikasa and ten-year old Eren.
The four of them lived in a small one-story house nestled far up in a wooded hollow deep back in the hills way down in Virginia, right in the heart of the Appalachian Mountains, in the coalfields of Southwestern Virginia. Levi was a coal miner and Hange was a nurse at Norton Community Hospital who often worked weekend night shift, and since it was Friday night, she was going to be away, leaving Levi to watch the kids again. He didn't mind too much, Levi was a loving and caring father who did his best to provide for his kids and he hadn't had much planned for tonight anyway.
It was 6:00 PM and the sun was starting to go down over the mountains while Levi was just quietly sitting back in his recliner, clad in a white tank top and black Addidas track pants as he sipped on a can of his favorite soda, Diet Mountain Dew. Mikasa and Eren were sitting on a couch beside the recliner and the three of them were watching The Simpsons on their TV. Even though it was a rerun, Levi and his kids loved that show and would always watch it whenever it would come on TV.
When it came to TV shows, there were two that the whole family would always watch and they were The Simpsons and King of the Hill and the kids were always quoting those shows left and right. But tonight was a Friday night and that meant Mikasa and Eren could both stay up late if they wanted. However, this particular night was going to be great. As a special treat, Levi was going to take his two kids out to their favorite fast food place, Burger King, located in the town of Saint Paul, about a twenty-five minute drive over Dante Mountain from their home in the little unincorporated village of Trammel.
Levi finished the last few sips of his Diet Mountain Dew and got up from the recliner before putting on a pair of cheap black Crocs, a denim jacket, and grabbing the keys to his car, a 1994 Chevrolet Blazer S-10.
"Eren, Mikasa, y'all get your shoes and jackets on, because we're going out to Burger King for dinner tonight! After that, we may all get together and play some video games or tabletop games if you want!"
"Wow, Dad! Really?"
"Yup, Mikasa. Really. It is the weekend and I figured it has been a while since we last went out to eat."
The two kids jumped up in excitement and immediately put on their jackets along with their socks and shoes before following Levi to the old Chevy Blazer. Mikasa got in the passenger's seat while Eren got in the back seat as Levi started up the car and put in their favorite mixtape CD, a collection of classic rock and oldies hits.
Soon, the three of them were jamming to the tunes of Black Sabbath, KISS, Queen, AC/DC, Meat Loaf, and Creedence Clearwater Revival as they made the winding and steep journey over Dante Mountain to the town of Saint Paul where their destination was. After about a half hour or so, they had finally made it to the Burger King.
Levi bought himself a full meal and two smaller meals for his two kids, along with a slice of pie each for their desserts. As the three were dining on their fast food supper, Mikasa looked up at Levi and asked him a question.
"Dad, back at the house you mentioned playing games as a family when we get back home. What did you have in mind? Monopoly? Go Fish? Dynasty Warriors? Marvel vs. Capcom 2? Or are we going to play one of those role-playing games you've mentioned before?"
"Well, I was thinking we could play a classic old-fashioned pen and paper role-playing game campaign when we get back. I was thinking we could try out either Dungeons & Dragons or Boot Hill, I have written down story notes for both games if either of you two are interested."
"Count me in! So, how do you play a pen-and-paper role-playing game?" said Eren.
"Well, Eren, games like Dungeons & Dragons and other RPG's are open-ended and story-driven. There are no winners and there are no losers, and the only limits are the imaginations of the players and the Game Master, who is like the referee and the narrator. You create a character and play through adventure stories in your imagination. Combat and other challenges are resolved by rolling dice. Dungeons & Dragons is a fantasy adventure game similar to Lord of The Rings, Conan The Barbarian, or The Elder Scrolls, while Boot Hill is a Wild West game of cowboys and the wild frontier. Do either of those ideas sound interesting to you?
"I like the idea of that. I will play. Not sure if I want to play Dungeons & Dragons or the other one."
"Why not both? We could totally do a crossover of Boot Hill and D&D if Dad is cool with it. I assume he's going to be the Game Master, right?"
"Yup, I will be the GM since this is your first campaign. I personally would love to do a crossover game of D&D and Boot Hill. Cowboys, Magic, Monsters, and more! Once we're done with our food, I will explain more of how the game works in the car. Thank God I still saved my old game books from high school!"
The three adventurers-to-be were all very excited to start playing this new game and could not wait to get home so they could begin...
